Wunderland in 4 Minutes

Thank you so much, Graybeard!

Hamburg, my home town ~ Germany the land of concepts!

Many visitors show up early in the morning and leave in the very last minute, only to come back next morning. Miniatur Wunderland cannot be explored in a couple of minutes. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to show you Wunderland in a 4 minute movie, but we can at least give your some impressions: The Wunderland in 4 minutes

The Wunderland in Numbers

The Wunderland is hard to describe in words. There are only so many times you can say 'big!', 'amazing!', 'detailed!', etc. So, here you can find a brief chart with Miniatur Wunderland related facts that aren't only interesting to die hard model builders.

How about 'awesome'!

Would the real economy be as busy as is modeled in Wunderland. I suppose that in the end it could serve as a three dimensional archive model of what life used to be.  :(

I visited Nurnberg once on a freezing winter day & warmed up for a while in a very impressive model train store that was packed with customers.  Later learned that Nurnberg is famous for it's "toy" industry esp with their annual trade show.  An LF poster was a big model-train buff & posted about http://www.northlandz.com/ (http://www.northlandz.com/) in NJ USA which claims to be the world's biggest model railway.

Hmm, I was so impressed by the old fortifications & buildings that I completely forgot about that.  But OTOH it's amazing how the combination of Allied carpet bombing & Zio-erasure of Nazi historical sites have whitewashed things over there.  On my first trip I was hoping to see some relics but hardly saw anything.  There's a Rhine castle I saw with a statue honoring the fallen troops...other than that I didn't see much relating to Nazi history.  Saw Tempelhof airport which was interesting but virtually deserted.  One thing I noted about Berlin was the huge British Embassy where the whole city block was cordoned off & guarded.  Wow, I thought EVERYONE loved them!  Reminded me of the World Bank's Pentagon-level security.  In Virginia there are Civil War sites & road signs everywhere, somehow we can appreciate the history w/o being accused of restarting the war.

When you visit the smaller towns EB, you can still find some lovely old buildings. I saw the big Canadian Embassy when it was still under construction a few years back. That was my only visit to Berlin, and of course we walked the Kurfürstendamm. The H.C. museum is Berlins biggest pissoir.

Oh yes, the small towns are gorgeous & most cities are pretty nice too.  They say Berlin has lots of green space & lakes, but the central core I saw was pretty bureaucratic & ugly (with ubiquitous grafittii) although the city is "efficient".  Drove by the Brandenburg Gate & the museum grounds, I think the most striking thing was the sheer amount of space the outdoor display required.  Only went to Berlin to see the famous Sechstagerennen bike race which was awesome.  The bike race is almost an excuse for a mid-winter party...much socializing by the spectators.  Hitler banned the "Six Days" races (undoubtedly a strategic mistake).  Folks rightly associate Germany with great cars & the autobahns but few in America know that Germans are dedicated cyclists that ride to work & shops even in the bitter cold.

I did not know that Adolf banned them. I wonder why?

I used to watch some of the bicycle races in Hamburg as a kid, close to the area where I lived. That was a really big deal even then - and free. The pavement was as smooth as it could be, we also used it for roller skating. Nothing as fancy as the photo above.

Hitler banned Six-Day Races, not all racing.  The Six-Day races were apparently associated with Jewish promoters & American "jazz culture" since they became very popular in 20's USA & Weimar Germany.  The NYC race at Madison Square Garden was so popular Europeans adopted the term "Madison" for that style racing.  Also the races used to be a rather brutal spectacle where riders actually rode, nearly non-stop for 6 days, although after 1900 there were laws limiting the # of hours/day of racing.  So I'm not sure of the exact reason for the ban but I'm guessing that the events were considered more of a spectacle than a true sport.

Anyway, the Six-Days are run on indoor velodromes during the winter.  Guess who's the world #1 builder of bike racing tracks?  Yup, the German Schuermann family who designed nearly all the top velodromes.  Interesting you note Hamburg's smooth roads...Wash DC (proper) has such bad roads that a fat-tired "mountain bike" is necessary for reasonable comfort--even autos suffer $millions/annual suspension damage from those roads.  & NYC? worse potholes than anywhere; last time I drove thru Manhattan I was doing a slalom to avoid them--kinda funny I thought because the office buildings lining the streets contained all the big financial firms who could have payed to fix the streets out of their pocket change.

Of course the Nazis weren't anti-bike.  I have a book "Nazi Regalia" which includes a picture of an SA bike-mounted contingent during a big parade.  Here's a pic of some HJ on tour to Berlin 1932  (note they all have lights, Germany is still one of the few countries that strictly mandates lights for night-time cycling):

Very nice post... EB

You know the Germans: ''Ordnung muss sein!''! Roads, country roads and highways are their pride and joy.

Long ago the WashPost had an article about Germany & they mentioned the famous "Ordnung muss sein" phrase & how it was the rough equivalent of "Home Sweet Home" for Germans...women would make needle-point renditions to hang on the wall.  So I downloaded a needle-point computer font & printed one up!  There was a Monty Python sketch about a German couple that are astonished to have bodies falling out of the sky around their house:  when the first body & the second fall, the German couple puzzles over how it's happening...but as further bodies fall the couple becomes preoccupied over what sort of order to arrange the bodies...apparently some sort of Holohoax subtext going on there.
Title: Re: * Videos
Post by: Sue on October 07, 2010, 09:39:02 PM
It is really quite simple: I would translate "Ordnung muß sein" as "Everything in its place", (rather than the very informal "Get your shit together").

Still drinking coca cola? Watch this!

Colas are bad news.  All their ingredients (save the water) are junk--& the acidity is incredibly high, about the same as lemon juice.  However no one drinks a half-liter of lemon juice at a sitting as they do with Coke.  I used to drink a lot of Coke & Pepsi as a teenager until I realized the acidity was actually making my skin itch, esp noticeable when exercising & sweating starts.

The equations in the beginning are just the natural consequences of a based-10 number system.

As for when people ask for more than 100%, it annoys the hell outta me.  I guess some people just don't understand that 100% is all there is.  And when speaking about work, even just 98% of what is humanly possible is seldom achieved.

As for the numbering of the letters, I doubt Fetcho would approve.

Philosophically speaking it means taking that extra step, making that extra effort needed to achieve something in life and relationships. From that perspective I think even Fetcho could not help to agree.

The Known Universe (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap100120.html)

Full screen is a must!  Enjoy!

Explanation: What would it look like to travel across the known universe? To help humanity visualize this, the American Museum of Natural History has produced a modern movie featuring many visual highlights of such a trip. The video starts in Earth's Himalayan Mountains and then dramatically zooms out, showing the orbits of Earth's satellites, the Sun, the Solar System, the extent of humanities first radio signals, the Milky Way Galaxy, galaxies nearby, distant galaxies, and quasars. As the distant surface of the microwave background is finally reached, radiation is depicted that was emitted billions of light years away and less than one million years after the Big Bang. Frequently using the Digital Universe Atlas, every object in the video has been rendered to scale given the best scientific research in 2009, when the video was produced. The film has similarities to the famous Powers of Ten video that has been a favorite of many space enthusiasts for a generation.

I watched both, Misty.

Rock & Roll and Mind Control makes sense to me, Laurel Canyon, etc.

Weather modification, Chemtrails (toxic cloud seeding, do you remember the dead birds dropping out of the sky in Esperanza a few years ago?) I can believe it because I see them in action, they linger, the planes fly low and criss-cross while regular air traffic contrails are some 36000 ft high, they dissipate within a couple of minutes ~ if that. Sometimes I see them both at the same time.

But I just don't buy this shape-shifting b.s... Icke has been at it for quite some time, they already talked about the subject on Liberty Forum.

He certainly knows his facts and does not beat around the bush.

He also mentions Perkins. I have read the 'Economic Hitman', which is THE book to read. I highly recommend it. You can easily dispense with 'Hoodwinked', too much repetition.

I've read Perkins, he's disinfo.  Hitman is a quick & somewhat entertaining read & Perkins is certainly correct about the MIC/Wall St nexus (though hardly ground-breaking in that regard).  However I was disappointed to find the book didn't delve too much in detail how the World Bank schemes worked.  Would have liked to have seen info/tables re various nations' debt repayments, currency manipulation, how World Bank/IMF arranged debt bailouts with private banks etc.

This may seem like quibbling but OTOH Perkins could have followed up Hitman with a more in-depth & scholarly study.  Anyway Perkins reveals that he is London disinfo with his bleating about environmentalism, Indian rights etc.  These movements are favorite oligarch tactics to keep nations weak & impoverished, ie depopulation.

I don't think he was disinformation, he admitted later what his job entailed. Apparently he quit his line of work on account of his first grandson.

He most definitely worked for the ESTABLISHMENT and he admits it. Well, he easily could have said much more in his book but, but he also wants to see his grand kids grow up, so therefor he can only say so much.

Step 1 - the benign stage, feeling things out, etc. If his endeavors unsuccessful...

Step 2 - if that did not work, the jackals arrive, i.e. CIA, MOSSAD, etc. for regime change through either causing unrest, revolution or more likely assassination, or, ultimately military force (Red Flag - Military intervention, etc.)

Step 3 - The Corporatists have won, HUGE profits! (Not for the tax payer - they also pay - like we all do.)

Same pattern, different country...

What do you think our young soldiers do? Same thing, they too work for the ESTABLISHMENT, while most of the young recruits think they are keeping our nations safe.

Got them, I will watch them in the morning, past bedtime for me. Good night.

First video - I can associate with. I came to Canada on a 7000 ton freighter and the water around Hebrides are not known to be calm. It was not nearly as bad as this video shows and that queasy feeling did not last too long, otherwise it was great voyage, 2 female passengers sharing quarters fit for a captain, and a great crew!

Second video - Oh my, that brings back memories of crossing the notorious Tasman See from Auckland to Sidney on the Oriana in the 70's. There, I really did get sea-sick. Returning to Canada from Auckland (visiting and old friend at the same time) was worth the extra expense, we came back on the Canberra.

Well a young recruit might do well to read Hitmen.  It was popular among college students too.  But was Perkins really breaking ground?  The close relationship between finance, industry & military/intel is an open secret that's been explored by numerous (esp lefty) writers.  When I accuse Perkins of being disinfo it's not that I consider the bulk of his writing to be lies but rather that he publicizes a problem & offers bogus solutions.

I noted that I had wished Perkins had followed up "Hitmen" with something more in-depth:

(Amazon customer reviews):
This follow-up to Confessions of Economic Hit Man is short on detail and retreads most of the territory of the first book. Found myself skimming through this because I heard or read it all before, especially with the dirth (sic) of complementary material that has come out on EHM stuff since the first book. Like the idea, but felt a bit taken for having purchased an epilogue described as a book.

I really was facinated with 'Confessions of an Ecomomic Hitman' and also liked his book 'The Secrets of the American Empire'. I was really looking forward to seeing what would be new in 'Hoodwinked'. I thought it was a bit disappointing after already reading these other two books by John Perkins. The book felt like reading the other two. Not too much new material here, and his conclussions and messages are pretty much the same in all of the books. If yout haven't read the other two books I mentioned, it will be a good read for you.

Customer reviews re his The Secret History of the American Empire: The Truth About Economic Hit Men, Jackals, and How to Change the World make some interesting notes...Perkins supports Global Warming scam, supports (CIA tool) Dalai Lama & Free Tibet etc.

You say Perkins wants to obscure some details to ensure personal safety--that might be true but OTOH I say he's lazy, repeatedly writes anecdotal-based books...basically profiting from his first career just like ex-CIA Robert Baer who made $$ after 9/11 with "exposes"....(Baer denies that WTC were imploded).  Baer heaps praise on Perkins in his foreword to Hoodwinked.

& it's weird that (AFAIK) Perkins has never covered the IMF/World Bank attack on Romania's Ceausescu who was killed a few months after announcing Romania had retired IMF/World Bank debt.  One could hardly find a clearer example of the Hitmen's murderous ways.  Perkins' website has no mention of Ceausescu nor Ferdinand Marcos--two notable leaders that tried to free their countries from bankster imperialism.  Why?  Perhaps because they didn't fit in with his lefty emphasis on mysticism, Greenery etc.

For me (at the time) the book was an eye-opener, for the simple reason that my Dad had told me how 'they' operate, of course, in simpler terms when I was much younger.

I did not even finish 'Hoodwinked' and I can agree with the readers reviews. I have never read: 'The Secrets of the American Empire'.

That Perkins supports the Global Warming scam and the Dalai Lama comes as a surprise, this I did not know. I do not trust the Dalai Lama any more than I trust the current Pope, or for that matter organized religion. (Again, blame it on my Dad).

I remember that, as well as the demonizing of Ceausescu and Marcos (and his wife's 80 pairs of shoes.) Trying to free your country from the banksters grip is deadly, as we have all learned....

I don't know if John Perkins was a CIA Operative. What he did was not noble by any stretch, but he did bring it to the fore. Regardless, as I have mentioned, there is only so much he can say, after all, he does want to live.

Honduras Coup, the CIA and two American Corporations

By John Perkins

August 07, 2009 "Information Clearing House" -- I recently visited Central America. Everyone I talked with there was convinced that the military coup that had overthrown the democratically-elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, had been engineered by two US companies, with CIA support. And that the US and its new president were not standing up for democracy.

Earlier in the year Chiquita Brands International Inc. (formerly United Fruit) and Dole Food Co had severely criticized Zelaya for advocating an increase of 60% in Honduras’s minimum wage, claiming that the policy would cut into corporate profits. They were joined by a coalition of textile manufacturers and exporters, companies that rely on cheap labor to work in their sweatshops.

Memories are short in the US, but not in Central America. I kept hearing people who claimed that it was a matter of record that Chiquita (United Fruit) and the CIA had toppled Guatemala’s democratically-elected president Jacobo Arbenz in 1954 and that International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT), Henry Kissinger, and the CIA had brought down Chile’s Salvador Allende in 1973. These people were certain that Haiti’s president Jean-Bertrand Aristide had been ousted by the CIA in 2004 because he proposed a minimum wage increase, like Zelaya’s.

I was told by a Panamanian bank vice president, “Every multinational knows that if Honduras raises its hourly rate, the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean will have t o follow. Haiti and Honduras have always set the bottom line for minimum wages. The big companies are determined to stop what they call a ‘leftist revolt’ in this hemisphere. In throwing out Zelaya they are sending frightening messages to all the other presidents who are trying to raise the living standards of their people.”

It did not take much imagination to envision the turmoil sweeping through every Latin American capital. There had been a collective sign of relief at Barack Obama’s election in the U.S., a sense of hope that the empire in the North would finally exhibit compassion toward its southern neighbors, that the unfair trade agreements, privatizations, draconian IMF Structural Adjustment Programs, and threats of military intervention would slow down and perhaps even fade away. Now, that optimism was turning sour.

The cozy relationship between Honduras’s military coup leaders and the corporatocracy were confirmed a couple of days after my arrival in Panama. England’s The Guardian ran an article announcing that “two of the Honduran coup government's top advisers have close ties to the US secretary of state. One is Lanny Davis, an influential lobbyist who was a personal lawyer for President Bill Clinton and also campaigned for Hillary. . . The other hired gun for the coup government that has deep Clinton ties is (lobbyist) Bennett Ratcliff.” (1)

DemocracyNow! broke the news that Chiquita was represented by a powerful Washington law firm, Covi ngton & Burling LLP, and its consultant, McLarty Associates (2). President Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder had been a Covington partner and a defender of Chiquita when the company was accused of hiring “assassination squads” in Colombia (Chiquita was found guilty, admitting that it had paid organizations listed by the US government as terrorist groups “for protection” and agreeing in 2004 to a $25 million fine). (3) George W. Bush’s UN Ambassador, John Bolton, a former Covington lawyer, had fiercely opposed Latin American leaders who fought for their peoples’ rights to larger shares of the profits derived from their resources; after leaving the government in 2006, Bolton became involved with the Project for the New American Century, the Council for National Policy, and a number of other programs that promote corporate hegemony in Honduras and elsewhere.

McLarty Vice Chairman John Negroponte was U.S. Ambassador to Honduras from 1981-1985, former Deputy Secretary of State, Director of National Int elligence, and U.S. Representative to the United Nations; he played a major role in the U.S.-backed Contra’s secret war against Nicaragua’s Sandinista government and has consistently opposed the policies of the democratically-elected pro-reform Latin American presidents. (4) These three men symbolize the insidious power of the corporatocracy, its bipartisan composition, and the fact that the Obama Administration has been sucked in.

The Los Angeles Times went to the heart of this matter when it concluded:

What happened in Honduras is a classic Latin American coup in another sense: Gen. Romeo Vasquez, who led it, is an alumnus of the United States' School of the Americas (renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). The school is best known for producing Latin American officers who have committed major human rights abuses, including military coups. (5)

All of this leads us once again to the inevitable conclusion: you and I must change the system. The president – whether Democrat or Republican – needs us to speak out.

Chiquita, Dole and all your representatives need to hear from you. Zelaya must be reinstated.

Opinion

The high-powered hidden support for Honduras' coup

The country's rightful president was ousted by a military leadership that takes many of its cues from Washington insiders.
By Mark Weisbrot July 23, 2009

Powerful special interests have flexed their muscles and confronted President Obama on the most important legislative priorities of his domestic agenda. But this kind of politics-by-influence-peddling doesn't stop at the water's edge. And in foreign policy, the consequences can be more immediate, violent and deadly.

Meet Lanny Davis, Washington lawyer and lobbyist, former legal counsel to President Clinton and avid campaigner for Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential bid. He has been hired by a coalition of Latin American business interests to represent the dictatorship that ousted elected President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras in a military coup and removed him to Costa Rica on June 28.

Davis is working with Bennett Ratcliff, another lobbyist with a close relationship to Hillary Clinton who is a former senior executive for one of the most influential political and public relations firms in Washington. In the current mediation effort hosted by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, the coup-installed government did not make a move without first consulting Ratcliff, an unnamed source told the New York Times.

Davis and Ratcliff have done an amazing public relations job so far. Americans, relying on media reports, are likely to believe that Zelaya was ousted because he tried to use a referendum to extend his term of office. This is false.

Zelaya's referendum, planned for the day the coup took place, was a nonbinding poll. It only asked voters if they wanted to have an actual referendum on reforming the country's Constitution on the November ballot. Even if Zelaya had gotten everything he was looking for, a new president would have been elected on the same November ballot. So Zelaya would be out of office in January, no matter what steps were taken toward constitutional reform. Further, Zelaya has repeatedly said that if the Constitution were changed, he would not seek another term.

If we add together the high-powered lobbyists from the Clinton camp, Republican members of Congress and conservatives within the State Department, the coup government has a lot of support from Washington.

So it's up to Obama to do the right thing. He can have the U.S. Treasury freeze the coup leaders' personal bank accounts and the assets of the coup leaders and their supporters, and deny them visas to the U.S. He could also impose trade sanctions -- 70% of Honduran exports go to the United States. He would have worldwide support for such steps: Both the Organization of American States and the U.N. General Assembly have voted unanimously to demand the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of Zelaya.

Almost all of the Latin American governments -- which are mostly left of center -- also sympathize with Zelaya because he is a reform president fighting against a corrupt oligarchy. In one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere, he raised the minimum wage by 60% and increased teachers' salaries and public pensions, as well as access to education.

The military has shot at peaceful demonstrators, killing one, according to human rights groups, and the coup government has closed TV and radio stations and arrested journalists. Two political activists have been murdered.

During the 1980s, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency trained a military death squad -- the infamous Battalion 316 -- that tortured and murdered hundreds of Honduran political activists. The U.S. Embassy looked the other way, and the State Department doctored its human rights reports to omit these crimes.

Obama has so far been silent about the coup government's violence and censorship. This silence is very unfortunate and difficult to explain. The repression may worsen if -- as expected -- the Arias mediation efforts fail and Zelaya makes good on his vow to return to Honduras.

Obama needs to show that the U.S. will not follow policies of the past by supporting Zelaya's return with action, not just words. Anything less will look like complicity in the eyes of the world, especially given the coup government's friends in high places.

Honduras Coup, the CIA and two American Corporations

By John Perkins

Yes the Honduras coup is interesting, Honduras has also built "export processing zones" with these corporate goodies:

FTZ INVESTMENT INCENTIVES

    Unrestricted currency conversion
Duty free importation of all production machinery, other equipment, fixtures, spare parts, raw Material and supplies.
Import and export shipments cleared in less then one day with minimum documentation.
No government income, sales or corporate taxes or fees.
Unrestricted repatriation of profits and capital at any time.
Low cost skilled and unskilled labor.
Ample supply of trainable and productive labor.
A wide range of low cost, local raw materials such as wood, cotton, textiles, fruits, sugar, vegetables, meats, seafood, leather, coffee, cocoa and spices are available for processing and manufacturing industries.
Many Honduran products enter the US duty free under the Caribbean Basin Initiative.

But again, it's hardly a secret (to the more literate folks) that Central America (& to some extent South America) is ruled by US corporations.

BTW the plane landing/Nissan truck video--it's a commercial!  OTOH the tv news recently featured a US passenger plane landing safely in Poland with no landing gear deployed...but they completely ignored the Iranian pilot who did similar with a non-deployed front wheel.

Not surprising, now imagine if this had been an American Pilot, that awesome landing would have been shown on every network, the talking heads would be praising him for the next 3-5 days -- at least.

Yes, I found that out just before I posted it this landing, nevertheless - it sure looked impressive.

Yeah, you have an attractive woman doing the narration, and then the 'Arab militant' getting shot in the head by one of the 'workers' like it's all part of the routine 'for our security'...And she stops the film so you can see the shooting 'from another angle'.

The video is uncannily like some government training videos I've seen.

'The Perfect Stranger'

Whoa! What a terrific movie. I particularly liked the part where the bozo and the bimbo discuss Hitler being the most evil person in history, and bin Laden committing 911. Award winning stuff here, that should be mandatory viewing for everyone. You’ll find that, by golly, it’ll make a difference in your life – I know it has mine.

I first saw it about 5 years ago...It didn't really run well in the theaters; was aimed at specific Christian audience through DVDs...But, yeah, very well done, taking place in 'middle America/soccer mom' territory...It really got to me.

...It really got to me.

It really got to me too. I also just loved the way he explains how Muslims and Hindus have false religions, and yet he says absolutely nothing about Judaism, except that it had been around for 1500 years. A mere oversight I’m sure.

Equally endearing was his question, “So you’re saying that the men who [started this religion, did so] based on something that they knew was a lie?” Of course the bozo doesn’t give the bimbo time to answer. And then; “Would someone willingly die for something that they knew wasn’t true?” Priceless. Truly award winning stuff here. Almost as good as “My Dinner With Andre”.

Hal Wallis, the producer, acquired the rights to Harold Robbins' novel "A Stone For Danny Fisher" with the intentions for it to be a non-musical vehicle starring either James Dean or Ben Gazzara. Following the death of Dean in 1955, the project was shelved. In January 1957, following the success of an Off-Broadway stage version of the story, Presley's name was suggested as a possible replacement. After negotiations were completed, the character of Fisher was changed from a boxer to a singer and the location was moved from New York to New Orleans.

Michael Curtiz, a noted director during the golden era of the Hollywood studio system whose famous productions included The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938, Yankee Doodle Dandy in 1942, and in the same year, Casablanca, was hired to helm the project.

After seeing an early copy of the finished film Presley thanked Curtiz for giving him the opportunity to finally show people the potential he had as an actor. King Creole was said to have been Presley's favorite role of his entire career, and he had high hopes of returning from the army to pick up from where he had left off. However, despite being better received by the critics than his previous films, and ticket sales being very good, he never got the chance to be taken as seriously as an actor again.

Riverdance the final performance

I first saw 'Riverdance' about 2001: It had been around for a while, but that was my first viewing it...I was really impressed at how they integrated dance and the traditional musics, i.e. Celtic and even some Flamenco in a modern way, and the use of lighting etc...Really a beautiful production...It also showed how folk forms could reach a big audience by using contemporary production style, but still maintain the essence of the folk forms...Very well done.

This version was done in 1985, just before he died...I did some gigs on a bill with his band that year (I was with an R & B/'Show' band) and his band was on the same bill...This was down on Padre Island, Texas at a big hotel called Bahia Mar...We were the 'house band' for about a month, and Nelson's band appeared there for about a week..I did get to say hello, and he was quite nice.

It was terrible about the plane crash...It reminded me of what happened to Buddy Holly in the late 50s.

There were a whole rash of singers killed under mysterious circumstances

With Nelson, the initial Hollywood rumour was that some of the band members were free-basing on the plane and that it caught fire...You look at Nelson in that video, he doesn't look like a crackhead, and I met him and the band and they seemed to be very normal and relaxed, certainly not hype like coke users...I never even saw them drink at the hotel bar.

Later it was revealed that the fire was caused by a faulty washer on the plane's gas heater line that leaked gas, and went up when the heater was ignited...One of the pilots lived.

Nelson was really good, pioneer of American 'rock-a-billy' and rock'n'roll...Family guy too, never into sleaze or excess.

Topham-McCarty Band (1990) "Double Trouble"

There are very few recordings of Top Topham (also known as Rashid Topham) playing, even when he was with The Yardbirds. In recent years he and Jim McCarty have got together infrequently to do some gigs to Blues aficionados. A pity, really, as Top Topham is one of the best blues guitarists on his preferred Fender Stratocaster.

Unfortunately I have never seen the 'Riverdance' performed in real life, I would go IF they would have a special performance.

The Flamenco is not my cup-a-tea. Perhaps more enjoyable in a live performance.

Very nice & the American musicians did a great job in keeping w/the style.  Local cable access tv has a weekly Sikh show, music is a regular part of their worship services, I guess it's roughly Hindustani style.  Now with smartphones & home theater net-radio-enabled receivers I'm getting back into music a bit.  Can listen to German techno while walking/biking, Indian music at home to relax, German schlage/VolksMusik while driving etc.

Indian classical music is very interesting, did some reading a while back & learned how it combines set patterns with much improvisation.  Of course jew music historians tell us that American blacks invented improvisation with jazz.  Always liked the twangy sitar sound, sort of like an electric guitar.

A mafia hitman once called that one of his tactics, put cyanide into a glass of beer, bump into target and "accidently" drop the cyanide laced beer over him/her.  Cyanide will then slowly be absorbed through the skin and the person will suffer a heart attack some 30 minutes later when the assasin is long gone..

Both the waiter and security guards failed there.

Yup--contrast to typical US chain restaurants where waiters often work in 2-person teams with the gal taking the order & guy toting the heavy food tray.  But I understand the Oktoberfest waitresses make pretty good tips.  Used to be a waiter in a rock 'n roll club, things would get crowded & raucous on weekends, IIRC never spilled a drink tray.  But maybe the German Merkel waiter was distracted by her bewitching beauty!?

Merkel is a ruthless career technocrat, her mentor was Helmut Kohl and I have never trusted her from day one. German leaders since the end of WWII have been tools for the elite and it is no different here or anywhere else. Sad but true.

Germany cannot complain. Even if Germans know the truth, and many do, to talk about it is simply VERBOTEN.

She was an activist in her high school and student days in the Stasi-controlled Evangelische Studentengemeinde (ESG) in East Berlin before she became a protégée of Helmut Kohl. A very ruthless woman.

Yes, I remember reading this.

She was seen as a politician with little chance of a future: dowdy and without much of a political background. But Angela Merkel made the most of her chances and became one of the world's most powerful women.

There is hardly a "homo politicus" in German post-war history who has been more underestimated than the pastor's daughter from East Germany.  Not very telegenic, undogmatic, highly pragmatic - these are some of the phrases often used to describe the German chancellor.

"Angela Merkel makes decisions based on numbers, data and facts," says her biographer Jacqueline Boysen. "She freely ignores ideological or dogmatic commitments," even in her own party. And this attitude hasn't hurt her; on the contrary, "Kohl's girl" has emancipated herself to become "Mommy" - and there are a number of good reasons for that.

She excelled in mathematics and Russian and completed her degree in physics in Leipzig as one of the best in her class. She was still a university student when she married Ulrich Merkel. The marriage did not last long, but she kept the name.

Sorry, but I'm going to allow my innate skepticism free rein over the jootoob, here;  this looks more like a Hollywood production than a legitimate documentary (although VERY convincing).

If something looks too good to be true, it probably is--and this presentation would be relatively for a joocroo to fake.

Until I see this guy perform with my own eyes in person and up close, I'm going to chalk this video up to jooz' creating an amazing report in order to buoy ratings in order to sell advertising.

'Twas fun to watch, though.

Mr. jacob, I found the story of the young girl who was raised by wild wolves to be so inspiring and uplifting ... it made me cry at times.
Did she really travel all over Europe for years during the war or did they just make that part up?

Also the young woman who swallowed her diamonds and deficated them again, time and time again for over a year ... how does anyone beat that for courage and will power? Who are these nasty people who keep saying feats like this are not possible ...could they be just anti-semites who hate Jews for their religion?

Yes 7 yr old Mischa dug out of Auschwitz, ran into the forest, and a wolf pack adopted her. She walked all over Europe. She joined the resistance, took a lover at 8 yrs old, and was a Nazi assassin (knives).

I myself escaped Auschwitz and was adopted by beavers. When the SS made a run for Antwerp (1945), I took my beavers and we chewed trees, the Tiger Tanks were blocked, and we were the real heroes of Bastonge. Me and my beavers also fought at Iwo Jima - we attacked sleeping japs and chewed their legs off before their banzai charges

That looks like such a heroic Jewish beaver ... hope he got the medal of honor. I hear they are giving them out these days to those people who didn't get any after the war ... you know how bad those evil antisemites were about handing out medals then .. why they didn't give you one if they didn't think you deserved it but now that has all changed ... we get them now just because we are Jews.

I found this video quite touching (ignoring the typical tourists) when this baby elephant just could not make it and kept slipping again and again until the adults finally helped him with a good push. Amazing that none of them, as big and heavy as they are, took a wrong step.

Actually now I read some posts where folks claim they've house-trained chickens but it's a lot of work, chicks poo every 15 minutes.

I'm late to the trend, Tori Spelling beat me to it, though, she even creates designer clothes for pet Coco (though as a busy mega-jewess she doesn't have time to house-train, uses diapers instead):

Interview with Gerald Celente of the Trends Journal:

A War with Iran Will be the Beginning of WW III

He has a history of spotting trends and predicting future events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the financial meltdown of 2008 long before they occurred. Celente is spotting new trends, and things do not look good. Gerald Celente thinks, “The banks are taking over the world.” That’s what is really happening in Europe with the sovereign debt crisis. Celente says, “America has already turned into pre-World War II Germany,” and “A war with Iran will be the beginning of World War III.” Celente lost money in the MF Global bankruptcy and says the lesson learned is “You don’t own your money unless you have it in your possession.” Greg Hunter of USAWatchdog.com goes “One-on-One with Gerald Celente.”

Thanks s-g.  The guy just started traveling a few years ago and wherever he was he'd take a video of himself doing a dance – which wasn't actually a dance but more like him jogging in place and moving his arms up and down.  Then he'd post it on youtube.  Then he got other people to start dancing with him and his last video (2008) had 40 mil views.  In this video he's actually learning how to dance, and teaching others.  Saw an interview and he said that he liked to go to countries that the msm portrays as impoverished, slum-like or bombed out and show a different side of things; that being – with all the political bs going on in the world, people still just want to have fun and dance.  It's quite an interesting story.

I started following him before he got really big in 2008. Have the song to that video too - it was a free download, at least at the time. Some friend of his made it.

His site was, "where the hell is Mark?" or at least it used to be. That's cool to hear about his learning/teaching dancing. Although it was charming watching his botched-up jig.

They could just be fat Germans. Remember, Frau Merkel is the new role model.

Merkel is not disgustingly fat-fat. In Germany they would say: plump or chubby, unlike these fat beauties below.

This is the first time that I have seen some rather chubby Germans (must be immigrants).  8)

Yes, indeed.  Once saw a Time-Life German cookbook that mentioned Germans used to have a certain term literally translated as Full-Slim which was a euphemism for plump.  The book also mentioned how in the old days (pre-WWII?) many middle-class Germans were accustomed to not 3 squares but 5 meals/day...not little fruit snacks either, all with meat etc.

True that in Germany obesity is less of a problem but OTOH I recall a 60 Minutes show (from long ago) about fat farms for German kiddies.  Sure it was propaganda but apparently true enough.

BTW in the waterbed video a bit odd that many sat on the front & tossed themselves back instead of easing across.  Makes me wonder if it wasn't a setup for at least some of them.

Heh, modern Germans not following signs unlike the good old days.  I blame the schools.   ;)

The sign says remove sharp objects (keys and phones) before testing.

There are still 5 meals per day in my house, EB.

The 2 extra 'meals' consist usually of fruit; an apple, orange or a banana. Or a piece of home-baked cake or a fancy piece of torte! Yesterday I made a plum torte - yummy with a bit of whipped cream, caramel sauce and toasted almonds.

What makes kids fat these days is no proper supervision.

I like 2 substantial meals + 1 glass of carrot juice & 1 smoothie, all depending on time & mood.  The old-time German diet would make me fat & sleepy I think.  I guess it's just different metabolisms or whatnot.  Jan Ullrich, 1st German to win Tour de France, was notorious for gaining a bit too much weight over the winter.  Then there's the ascetic Michael Rasmussen, super-lo body fat %, some say too low but he did win races.

Good news

Last week the Secret Service walked into a small bakery in Radford,
Virginia to ask the owner, Chris McMurray, if he would like a chance at
priceless publicity by letting his tiny store, "Crumb and Get It", be used
as a photo op for Vice President Biden. Heaven knows, Chris needed all the
help he could get. He and his wife had just started the small bakery only
three months ago and were struggling desperately to make a go of it with a
workload that often required the wife to work 24 hours straight. To the
agents' astonishment, however, Chris respectfully but firmly said no. As a
devout Christian (who ends each sale with "God bless"), his religious
beliefs were at odds with a President who's flatly refused to step foot
inside a church (save for photo ops and funerals) since gaining the Oval
Office, has just endorsed gay marriage and won't celebrate Christmas but
will celebrate Ramadan, etc. Chris was also at odds with that same
President for telling small business owners throughout America - "you
didn't build that". As Chris explained, he and his wife did build their
store and thus weren't willing to it be used for the Obama
administration's political purposes.

Result? Though the female anchor of the local news channel freaked out on
the air by wondering aloud if Chris didn't realize what trouble he might
cause for himself by snubbing the Vice President, the reality had been the
total opposite. Chris has been swamped with business. As he told the
reporter days later in amazement, the phone has been ringing nonstop with
orders from all over the country for Chris and his wife to deliver cookies
and cupcakes to homeless shelters, churches and nonprofit groups, etc. And
get this, the first orders came from the very Secret Service agents who'd
requested the store for the Biden photo op. Not only were the agents not
shocked by Chris' refusal, they were so delighted that they ordered
cookies and cupcakes for themselves on the spot.

Here's the video. Enjoy.

Good video; the note about Bertrand Russell was esp interesting since his actual role has been covered up for so long.  MSM/gov't portrayed him as a pacifist do-gooder which is completely opposite the truth.  & in re the "computer revolution" Russell had direct connections to that (ie nothing intrinsically wrong with technology but this bunch twists it for evil purposes):

The influence of such satanic and perverted characters, as
the British Round Table’s late Lord Bertrand Russell and
H.G. Wells, and their lackeys Norbert Weiner, John von Neumann,
and the still existing nut-case Marvin Minsky, in crafting
the kind of information theory hoax, which fostered the
insane immoral beliefs of technological and population equilibrium,
i.e., depopulation, mixed with the axiomatic computer-
linear thinking, has created a potentially self-doomed
society. Historically, the destruction of human society has
never been blatantly direct. The more conniving method by
the oligarchy is to get the population to induce its own
doom.

I can't blame them, I would worry too. Here it has been raining for the last few days, but I don't remember any super-storms here. Maybe HAARP will arrange for some, we certainly had our share of Chemtrails. Temp. kinda cold after 39C for most of our summer season.

Whoa, 39C pretty toasty.  Local area had a hot summer plus weird microclimate drought where it only rained about 1ce a month whereas nearby spots got much more rain.  Spent much time watering stuff, now we get a ton of rain when it's too late.

Osprey -- the ultimate fisher

Facts about Osprey

Did you know Canada supports one third of the world's osprey population?
Female Osprey sitting on a post Female Osprey sitting on a post

Osprey is a fish-eating hawk with a scientific name called pandion haliaetus.
It is a spectacular big bird at the top of the aquatic food web. It has distinct
characteristics such as:

    gull-like crook in the wing
dark brown line through the eye and on the side of the face
    weighs 1.5 to 2.0 kg
wingspan is 1.6 metres. Like other birds of prey the osprey has powerful sharp talons and a hooked beak
    for handling their prey.

The main predator of osprey eggs is the raccoon, while the great horned owl sometimes kill osprey chicks and adults.

Ospreys are superb fishers and indeed eat little else—fish make up some 99 percent of their diet. Because of this appetite, these birds can be found near ponds, rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways around the world. Ospreys hunt by diving to the water's surface from some 30 to 100 feet (9 to 30 meters) up. They have gripping pads on their feet to help them pluck fish from the water with their curved claws and carry them for great distances. In flight, ospreys will orient the fish headfirst to ease wind resistance.

Ospreys are sometimes confused with bald eagles, but can be identified by their white underparts. Their white heads also have a distinctive black eyestripe that goes down the side of their faces. Eagles and ospreys frequent similar habitats and sometimes battle for food. Eagles often force osprey to drop fish that they have caught and steal them in midair.

Human habitat is sometimes an aid to the osprey. The birds happily build large stick-and-sod nests on telephone poles, channel markers, and other such locations. Artificial nesting platforms are common in areas where preservationists are working to reestablish the birds. North American osprey populations became endangered in the 1950s due to chemical pollutants such as DDT, which thinned their eggshells and hampered reproduction. Ospreys have rebounded significantly in recent decades, though they remain scarce in some locales.

Most ospreys are migratory birds that breed in the north and migrate south for the winter. They lay eggs (typically three), which both parents help to incubate. Osprey eggs don't hatch all at once, but are staggered in time so that some siblings are older and more dominant. When food is scarce these stronger birds may take it all and leave their siblings to starve.

Commendations, Mr. McKenna and CBC, for an eminently superb example of the best in revelatory journalism. It's been long-coming for long-suffering victims of institutionalized price suppression, fraud, and theft in the precious metals markets to experience justice, but it appears that such justice may finally be approaching imminence. Thanks for your role in hastening that to reality.

And, Curious Ty, you're right, there's no conspiracy, because the evidence is in plain and unmistakeable view, and in overwhelming quantity, amassed over the years by GATA and other fine organizations, corroborated by the testimonials of individuals such as Andrew Maguire and Eric Sprott.

We await with anticipation the day when the precious metals regain their historic and proper roles as the anchors of sound, sustainable, and disciplined economies.

Documentarian reveals the drama and danger behind one of the world’s oldest currencies

MONTREAL – Brian McKenna didn’t predict the recent nosedive in gold prices, but he knows someone who did.

“Andy sent me an email early Friday morning,” recounted the Montreal director. “He said, ‘There’s a big event happening. Someone’s dumping 500 tons of gold into the market.’ That ended up driving the price down by $78 an ounce. And 500 tons is 16 million ounces — we’re talking about a serious intervention here. Who’s got that kind of money?”

“Andy” is Andrew Maguire, a key source in McKenna’s fascinating new film The Secret World of Gold, which premières Thursday at 9 p.m. on CBC-TV. The hour-long documentary plunges into the dramatically rich narrative of gold, unveiling some shocking facts along the way.

“I was just going to do a history piece, until I stumbled over a whistleblower,” McKenna said.

A veteran gold and silver trader, Maguire denounces the shady tactics of the industry, breaking down the ways in which precious metal prices are manipulated using insider trading.

“He was tremendous,” McKenna said. “It took me eight months to persuade him to come on camera, but I was willing to wait. I knew he was critical to the film. It turns out he was burned by the BBC. He spent seven months showing them everything, going online and showing them the way things worked. Then after all that, they said, ‘The show’s been killed.’

“Word on the street is that Tony Blair, who is on a retainer to JPMorgan for $2 million a year, made a call (and the story was dropped). Did that happen? I don’t know. It’s an opinion that people hold; it doesn’t make it so. But something made the BBC stop an important investigation into which they had probably invested three-quarters of a million dollars.”

McKenna’s film also explores the secretive smuggling of European gold reserves during the Second World War, and how gold has gone from a reliable physical currency to an abstract concept, bought and sold in the blink of an eye on the stock market, taking on all the baggage of modern global finance in the process.

An investigative journalist and historian, McKenna estimates he has made 100 films over his career, including many provocative documentaries on war and politics. The topic of gold presented itself to him in the form of a rumour.

“A long time ago, I heard a story which I wasn’t sure was true,” he said, “about all this gold coming to the Sun Life Building’s vaults, far below the surface at the height of the Second World War. I thought, ‘That’s curious,’ but it turned out to be a critical moment in the war: if that gold had ended up at the bottom of the ocean, England wouldn’t have had the money to buy arms from the U.S., which was operating on a cash-and-carry basis, and fight off Hitler.”

Vast amounts of French and English gold were shipped to North America to avoid being claimed by the Nazis, McKenna reveals, with Montreal and Ottawa becoming important for storage. It’s but one example among millions of gold being moved, hidden, stolen, reclaimed and sunk to the bottom of the sea through the ages, making and breaking many a nation along the way.

Those expecting an escapist narrative about the enduring allure of one of the world’s oldest currencies don’t know McKenna. A founding producer of The Fifth Estate, he’s like the anti-Midas: he can’t help but dig up the dirt on anything he touches.

His 1992 CBC documentary The Valour and the Horror received five Gemini Awards, while sparking a CRTC investigation, a senate inquiry and a $500 million lawsuit by Air Force veterans, which was dismissed. All to say, the man is used to ruffling feathers. In keeping with tradition, The Secret World of Gold is far from a puff piece.

“It’s the toughest documentary I’ve ever made,” McKenna said. “It took over a year, and led me down so many corridors. Once you go down one corridor, two doors open, and you don’t know which one to take. This happened over and over. It’s virgin territory. No one has been down this path before, to report it.”

Though his film reveals amazing things about humanity’s conflicted relationship with gold, McKenna was most excited by the human story at its centre. Maguire may well have put his life on the line by speaking out, the director explained.

“We weren’t able to include it in the film, because it’s still a mystery, but it looks like somebody tried to kill him. Two days after he blew the whistle (to the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee, in 2010), out of nowhere a van rammed and almost demolished his car. And there was almost no investigation.

“Andrew Maguire standing up as a gold and silver trader and saying, ‘This is wrong’ — that’s the kind of courage I like to capture in my documentaries. Whether it’s people who (survived) Auschwitz, who escaped and lived to tell their story, or veterans who thought bombing women and children in the Second World War was not the best strategy, and stood by me when all hell broke loose.

“Celebrating heroes — I like to do that.”

Here are a couple videos from You Tube related to the Uyghur people, a Turkic tribe that has lived in Xinxiang, the northwestern province of China...Over the past decade, there has been conflict between the ruling Han Chinese, and the Uyghurs, leading to violence and police action...These videos are filmed in Urumqui, the capitol, mostly popul;ated by Han Chinese, but with a large percentage of Turkic Uyghurs, Uzbeks, and Russians...The first video is of the night street market in Urumqui, with some music by a wonderful Uighur female pop group called 'Shahrizoda'...The song is titled 'Lover' in Uyghur.

The second video is also quite good: An American young woman who has been living and working in Urumqui for a number of years and just shows some scenes of daily life in China's 'Wild West'...I hope you enjoy....Urumqui is home to at least 5 million people.

Maybe when this thing with Mom is settled one way or the other, I can go somewhere...Right now, YouTube is an escape...Even though Google bought out YouTube, it is still surprisingly good and uncensored...I posted some Palestine videos maybe 10 days ago, and there are many, many more out there...You know, You Tube was not founded by 'tribe members'.

Was watching videos of the Congo yesterday, but I wouldn't even post them here, as they are too distressing.

To some, money is no object. :) I would like to see that part of the world, that would be quite an experience, but this would be far too expensive for me.

Yes going to China, you need about $5000 from North America, for say, two weeks with food and accommodation, especially to Western China.

You Tube was not started by tribe, but they bought it, I believe in 2008: Google did.

Google owns YouTube. But who owns Google?

Google -Sergey Brin (j), Larry Page (j)

Wikipedia - Jim Wales (j)

Facebook - Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Justin Rosenstein (j*s)

Google is connected to the CIA and NSA who spy using ECHELON.

I presume that when we use the search-engines, we all leave tracks.

That's because they are so enthralled with their own superiority that for anyone to tell them different strikes them dumb, which is what they truly are. If they were not this would have been aired across the nation nearly two years ago when it was recorded. Yes indeed, the internet will sweep the mainstream media into the gutter, where it belongs.

They are certainly trying. Fancy graphic and lots of eye candy. But that people can get on TV and I don't think that the people waking up are so easily impressed anymore. In fact all that clutter is a turn off. People are waking up to the reality that they have been fooled for a long time now and they are less inclined to fall for more of the same. It's more like 'just the facts, ma'am.' - a trend I hope will gain momentum in the months ahead.

Amen!  Farrakhan says US becoming laughing-stock.  Once worked with a German woman, we were discussing decline of US auto industry--she noted US failure to adopt metric system as evidence of US backwardness as well as the failure to preserve the industry.  I (being then a dedicated reader of The Economist & similar J-Libertarian stuff) defended US:  I explained how much US industry was already metric-based & what with CAD/CAM it didn't make much difference; I blabbed about Information Economy & how Hollywood earned $$billions overseas etc.

D'oh, I wonder who was right?   :-[  Hmm, for decades JMSM was preaching how awful Germany's economic system was (sclerotic, socialist etc) but whoops, now (even amid collapsing trans-Atlantic economy) their unemployment rate is lower, poverty is lower etc etc.

Armania, what a sad state of decay, but that's not all...
------
As President Barack Obama began his second term in January, nearly 50 million Americans — one in six — were living below the income line that defines poverty, according to the bureau. A family of four that earns less than $23,021 a year is listed as living in poverty.

This comes at a time when government spending cuts of $85 billion have kicked in after feuding Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on a better plan for addressing the national deficit. (Just more of the usual theater?)

The rising poverty rate is NOT due to the government cutting it's spending. This is because government doesn't produce anything and thereby does not produce profit nor does it's spending expand the economy.

We can say that the increase in GDP is a money illusion. – True you have more money, but if everything is more expensive and you are not any better off.

If you print more money the number of goods and services will stay the same, you just have more money. Therefore people will be willing to spend more cash for the same limited number of goods. Therefore, the price of goods would simply rise.

The bs about supply and demand sounds like a logical theory, unfortunately it has nothing to do with reality. Most of the petrol in the US comes from Canada. Supply and demand says petrol in Canada should be cheaper in Canada than the US cause they produce it, but it's not. And let's not even get into the US dumping wheat into the sea to maintain prices.

Founding as a Crown Corporation : 1975 - 2009

Petro-Canada was founded as a Crown Corporation in 1975 by an act of Parliament. It started its operations on 1 January 1976. The company was given C$1.5 billion in start-up money and easy access to new sources of capital. It was set up in Calgary, despite the hostility of existing oil firms.[citation needed] Its first president was Maurice Strong. The Progressive Conservatives (PCs), then led by Albertan Joe Clark, were opponents of the company, and advocated breaking it up and selling it. However, they were unable to proceed with these plans during their brief time in power.

(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9a/PetroCanadaCenter.JPG/150px-PetroCanadaCenter.JPG) Petro-Canada Fuel Pump

With the establishment of Petro-Canada, the federal government transferred its 45% stake in Panarctic Oils Ltd. and its 12% stake in Syncrude to the newly established company. In 1976, Petro-Canada purchased Atlantic Richfield Canada, in 1978 Pacific Petroleums, and in 1981 Petrofina. Most of the original Petro-Canada refineries and service stations were acquired from BP Canada in 1983.

The company became popular outside of Alberta as a symbol of Canadian nationalism. It quickly grew to become one of the largest players in the traditional oil fields of the west as well as in the oil sands and the East coast offshore oil fields.

When the Liberals returned to power in 1980, energy policy was an important focus, and the sweeping National Energy Program was created. This expanded Petro-Canada, but it was detrimental to Alberta's economy. The PC government of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney (1984–1993) stopped using Petro-Canada as a policy tool, and it began to compete fully and successfully with the private sector companies.

How human waste could power Nigeria's slums

Sewage, collected from household septic tanks, is deposited in the Lagos lagoon

In the crowded slums of Lagos, Nigeria, untreated sewage mingles with the chaotic network of pipes that deliver water to the city. Those who can't afford a local borehole or a private vendor know better than to take their chances with the taps -- most preferring to go thirsty instead.

That's according to Olatunbosun Obayomi, a Lagosian microbiologist and inventor who has lived in the city all his life.

But now Obayomi thinks he's found a solution -- one that not only tackles the slums' sanitation issues, but creates free, clean energy in the process.

"With a cheap retrofit, household septic tanks -- the source of the sewage -- can be converted into biogas generators," said Obayomi, 29, whose concept has earned him a TED fellowship, a Nigerian Youth Leadership Award and growing international acclaim.

State of Play: Euro 2013, Football and Palestine

Published on Jun 4, 2013

A film by Gregg McDonald of Consequential Films

Producers, Hugh Tisdale and Deborah Rich of Philosophy Football

In the autumn of 2011 Philosophy met Honey Thalijeh, then captain of the Palestine Women's Football team.

Honey told us the story of football in her country and we made a promise. That for Euro 2013, the Under 21s tournament hosted by Israel, we would visit Palestine to make a film and help tell the world what football means for ordinary Palestinians living on the other side of the wall Israel built to encircle and occupy their land.

The film was made on the eve of Israel hosting Euro 2013. Filmed, cut and edited in the space of 48 hours this is politically-committed reportage at its rapid and rough best. It was premiered at the Palestine Olympic Association HQ in Ramallah. Please spread this film far and wide.

The Palestine Football Supporters Club T-shirt is available at www.philosophyfootball.com

Very sad to be a national team without a nation.

Definition: Haggis is a Scottish dish made of the heart, liver and lungs of a sheep or lamb, combined with oats, suet and other herbs and spices, and then cooked in a casing traditionally made of the animal's stomach. Thus, haggis is essentially a form of sausage.

In a typical recipe, the haggis ingredients, including the organ meats, are cooked and then chopped, seasoned and enclosed in the stomach lining, which is then tied with cooking twine. The trussed haggis is then simmered for several hours.

The stomach must be soaked in salted water before preparing the haggis, and in some preparations it is turned inside out before filling. The stomach must be pierced a few times before cooking the haggis so that steam will escape, otherwise it could burst.

Haggis is traditionally served with mashed potatoes and puréed turnips, a combination known as "tatties and neeps." The spices used in seasoning a haggis usually include cayenne pepper, allspice and sometimes nutmeg.

For formal occasions, the cooked haggis can be served on a platter with the stomach casing split open. Or portions of haggis can be scooped out and served on individual plates.

Modern haggis recipes can involve cooking the haggis ingredients in an artificial casing, or simply baked in a loaf pan using no casing at all.

I have never tried haggis, but read the ingredients and it is not at all appealing.

Actually, nowadays many haggis makers use liver and prime cuts of mutton/lamb to make the stuffing they put in the sheep's stomach. That is just to keep it all together while cooking, and it's cut open to release the mince. I usually eat it with potatoes, peas, and gravy as I find it rather unpalatable dry.  :)

Most peoples are unaware that the Germans, under National Socialism, had the first national television network,DFR...From what I glean from this video, supposedly put together from film archives that were under the control of the East German government, it seems to be a sort of prototype of Public Broadcasting System in the USA, but with a different slant... :D...But similar with variety shows, plays, ballet, orchestra music, health & fitness programs and some news and commentary.

The video was assembled by Der Spiegel, so one must beware of the constant use of the term 'Nazi'...But it is quite an interesting video, and the network became quite technically advanced over time, best equipment, pioneering transmission modes, etc...Enjoy.

Yes, this is true, Wulfgar, though we never had a TV back home.

Theft of German Scientific Research Fueled Post-War Technology Boom
     By Daniel W. Michaels

"TO THE VICTORS BELONG THE SPOILS" is an American saying (attributed to Andrew Jackson) and, regrettably, an occasional American practice as it was in the case of "the Great Patent Heist of 1946." It was made official policy in World War II by President Harry Truman's Executive Order 9604, also known as the "License to Steal," which permitted agents of the U.S. government to execute the greatest robbery in world history: the theft of German intellectual (scientific) property. What technology the Americans and Soviets stole has, in fact, fueled some of the greatest scientific advances of the modern era.

Now, almost three-quarters of a century after World War II, as the fear of arrest and punishment for denying the received version of the causes and consequences of World War II as established by the victorious Allies diminishes, more and more Germans are investigating Allied behavior before, during and after the war. Aside from the "holocaust," which remains immune from critical studies, almost any aspect of the war, however embarrassing to the victors (e.g., the strategic bombing campaign), may now be studied without fear of retribution.

In this new spirit, Friedrich Georg has published a study of Allied postwar policy regarding the disposition of German intellectual property, especially the modern and futuristic patents of Nazi Germany. Georg finds that the Allies, chiefly the Americans and the Soviets, simply confiscated all patents, designs, inventions etc they could lay their hands upon - military, industrial and commercial - regardless of international law or the Geneva Conference. Once in the United States or Soviet Russia the German inventions were "reinvented" and stamped "Made in the U.S.A." or "XXXX."

When World war II ended, America's elite determined that the United States would not lapse back into it's prewar depressed state, but rather would revitalize its economy and have a first-class military and industrial establishment. To this end, germany's advanced military hardware, aeronautical and industrial secrets would simply be confiscated and transplanted in America.

Even before the war ended, Vannevar Bush, America's scientific advisor, recommended that the activities of the Combined Intelligence Operations Subcommittee (CIOS), a joint Anglo_American intelligence-gathering operation, be expanded to include the exploitation of German technical information of an industrial nature as well as of strictly military matters. In August 1945, President Harry Truman, acting under the adage that "might makes right" issued Executive Order 9604 ordering the release and distribution of confiscated German scientific and industrial information (technologies, inventions, methods, processes, equipment etc) to the U.S. civilian economy. It was literally a license to steal.

That can certainly be a nuisance and who needs it?

BREAKING POINT - WW3 in November as Israel will strike Iran

Published on Oct 28, 2013

World War 3 a.k.a. Armageddon set to start in November as the Middle East reaches a breaking point. Israel will strike Iran's nuclear installations. The signs are all there as recent unprecedented events foreshadow a dark period for humanity.

Why November?

ISIS (Institute for Science and International Security) estimates Iran could have enough enriched uranium for a first bomb in less than 2 months. Whether Iran is after a nuclear bomb or not, is irrelevant as this non-governmental institution states, "The shortening breakout times have implications for any negotiation with Iran. An essential finding is that they are currently too short and shortening further, based on the current trend of centrifuge deployments". It's just too close for comfort to even talk about a nuclear deal at this time with Iran at breakout point. And so Israel will do it's best to give the world powers and Iran a little more breathing room to talk.

Netanyahu stated on October 1, 2013 at the United Nations that Israel is prepared to act alone knowing it would be defending the world. He also stated enigmatically that Israel is prepared for the consequences of a pre-emptive strike quoting the Prophet Amos, who predicts Israel will rise from the ashes to reign supreme. Iran and it's allies are paying close attention, and also preparing themselves for an impending attack and retaliation.

Pat Buchanan: 300 nukes in Israel yet Iran a threat?

Islamic wars have brought questionable benefit to the US over the last 20 years, former US presidential advisor Pat Buchanan, author of Suicide of a Superpower, shared with RT. A new war in the Middle East will be a disaster for the US and for the world economy, he says. "I opposed the Desert Storm operation in 1991 cleaning Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait because, I said, 'This would only be the first Arab-American war.'" Looking at the number of conflicts in the Islam world that America is taking part in now, one cannot but admit that Buchanan was right 20 years ago. "You cannot replicate the Middle West in the Middle East," Pat Buchanan concluded. From the time of the Cold War the US has military bases all over the world. Today, running a budget deficit of 10 per cent of its GDP, America simply cannot afford to continue "to carry this enormous burden, defending 40 or 50 countries around the world," Buchanan says, "We have to bring troops home." Getting rid of these bases essentially means dismantling the American Empire to help the US survive beyond 2025. America's crusade under the banner of ending tyranny in the world is "utterly utopian".

;D Hey Lonewolf! Hope you're well. I wanted more of the old crowd -or a new one- to be here.

Some timeless music from back when music was good (& not populated by ghetto females, thugs & oversexualized immature plebeians).

Hello... been awhile. Good to see you...

No news on the old crowd. gelignite can be found on most Saturdays at 'Inside the Eye Live', the Fetch's site. Dennis was also a member from way back. Dennis comes on at 7:00 am PST which is a bit early for me most weekends. That's about it. We do get new members but they don't post - not a verbose bunch   :o

^^^ Glad to see you're still here, fighting the good fight. I remember when there was a regular crowd here...regret they can't come back. Discussion is crucial. I hope Sushi, OT, Frank et al are okay. I wonder what became of Jacob.  :-\
I wonder about nature of "newcomers" too.  :-X

Thanks. I'm surprised GM actually spoke up in defence of Palestinians here too. He was scorned for his opposition, & he turned out to be so right about the war.

I used to really love this guy. His 80's interviews were classy & principled. Seems he's now the typical snarky man (gays & heteros are same to me), praising ghetto females & letting establishment ridicule him as a white guy. ??? His same-sex attractions & other male issues got to him & he turned into object of ridicule for Zio press. He fell into trap of public misinfo about sexuality & it's been a harsh ride for him since. I don't get why he panders to modern pop culture as he's expressed contempt for it. He even mentions Zio press here.  :-\

He's going the way of so many men now; reverting to boy form out of grief for male bonding. Jesus, men these days.

^^^ Yes major ouch, because many were worried for him and now he's dead!  :'( :'(So horrified, angry & depressed. Why couldn't ppl try harder to get the man to stop with the drugs?

It seems his heart failed -at only 53- likely from drugs he did in his later life. He was not an addict in his younger yrs. He became this way to because he had no way out. And no one could help him. Can't believe decent, generous lovely ppl like him die & suffer whilst evil persists to destroy us all.  :'( :'(
