The American public is being prepared. If the attack on Iran does come, there will be no warning, no declaration of war, no truth, writes John Pilger

The lifts in the New York Hilton played CNN on a small screen you could not avoid watching. Iraq was top of the news; pronouncements about a "civil war" and "sectarian violence" were repeated incessantly. It was as if the US invasion had never happened and the killing of tens of thousands of civilians by the Americans was a surreal fiction. The Iraqis were mindless Arabs, haunted by religion, ethnic strife and the need to blow themselves up. Unctuous puppet politicians were paraded with no hint that their exercise yard was inside an American fortress.

And when you left the lift, this followed you to your room, to the hotel gym, the airport, the next airport and the next country. Such is the power of America's corporate propaganda, which, as Edward Said pointed out in Culture and Imperialism, "penetrates electronically" with its equivalent of a party line.

The party line changed the other day. For almost three years it was that al-Qaeda was the driving force behind the "insurgency", led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a bloodthirsty Jordanian who was clearly being groomed for the kind of infamy Saddam Hussein enjoys. It mattered not that al-Zarqawi had never been seen alive and that only a fraction of the "insurgents" followed al-Qaeda. For the Americans, Zarqawi's role was to distract attention from the thing that almost all Iraqis oppose: the brutal Anglo-American occupation of their country.

Now that al-Zarqawi has been replaced by "sectarian violence" and "civil war", the big news is the attacks by Sunnis on Shia mosques and bazaars. The real news, which is not reported in the CNN "mainstream", is that the Salvador Option has been invoked in Iraq. This is the campaign of terror by death squads armed and trained by the US, which attack Sunnis and Shias alike. The goal is the incitement of a real civil war and the break-up of Iraq, the original war aim of Bush's administration. The ministry of the interior in Baghdad, which is run by the CIA, directs the principal death squads. Their members are not exclusively Shia, as the myth goes. The most brutal are the Sunni-led Special Police Commandos, headed by former senior officers in Saddam's Ba'ath Party. This unit was formed and trained by CIA "counter-insurgency" experts, including veterans of the CIA's terror operations in central America in the 1980s, notably El Salvador. In his new book, Empire's Workshop (Metropolitan Books), the American historian Greg Grandin describes the Salvador Option thus: "Once in office, [President] Reagan came down hard on central America, in effect letting his administration's most committed militarists set and execute policy. In El Salvador, they provided more than a million dollars a day to fund a lethal counter-insurgency campaign . . . All told, US allies in central America during Reagan's two terms killed over 300,000 people, tortured hundreds of thousands and drove millions into exile."

Although the Reagan administration spawned the current Bushites, or "neo-cons", the pattern was set earlier. In Vietnam, death squads trained, armed and directed by the CIA murdered up to 50,000 people in Operation Phoenix. In the mid-1960s in Indonesia CIA officers compiled "death lists" for General Suharto's killing spree during his seizure of power. After the 2003 invasion, it was only a matter of time before this venerable "policy" was applied in Iraq.

According to the investigative writer Max Fuller (National Review Online), the key CIA manager of the interior ministry death squads "cut his teeth in Vietnam before moving on to direct the US military mission in El Salvador". Professor Grandin names another central America veteran whose job now is to "train a ruthless counter-insurgent force made up of ex-Ba'athist thugs". Another, says Fuller, is well-known for his "production of death lists". A secret militia run by the Americans is the Facilities Protection Service, which has been responsible for bombings. "The British and US Special Forces," concludes Fuller, "in conjunction with the [US-created] intelligence services at the Iraqi defence ministry, are fabricating insurgent bombings of Shias."

On 16 March, Reuters reported the arrest of an American "security contractor" who was found with weapons and explosives in his car. Last year, two Britons disguised as Arabs were caught with a car full of weapons and explosives; British forces bulldozed the Basra prison to rescue them. The Boston Globe recently reported: "The FBI's counter-terrorism unit has launched a broad investigation of US-based theft rings after discovering that some of the vehicles used in deadly car bombings in Iraq, including attacks that killed US troops and Iraqi civilians, were probably stolen

in the United States, according to senior government officials."

As I say, all this has been tried before - just as the preparation of the American public for an atrocious attack on Iran is similar to the WMD fabrications in Iraq. If that attack comes, there will be no warning, no declaration of war, no truth. Imprisoned in the Hilton lift, staring at CNN, my fellow passengers could be excused for not making sense of the Middle East, or Latin America, or anywhere. They are isolated. Nothing is explained. Congress is silent. The Democrats are moribund. And the freest media on earth insult the public every day. As Voltaire put it: "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."

No, No, No, can't be. We are afraaaiiiiid of an imminent civil - any day now - for three years running... ;)

We 'are' that civil war, and the Iraqis don't bite.
So we do the usual - keep on killing, while hoping someone comes up with another brilliant idea.

Newsy put up a good piece on the death squads.

Thank you, rhj. I had no idea Newsy had a blog - cool...

adds:
If you can, please tell the truth-telling-machineTM that one cannot comment on his laser-like-insightsTM
As you know, I don't have an account "over there". Thanks in advance.

Or, we could offer to have his blogs discussed/elaborated here (flagging NOLAJBS - what do you think?).
He gets one thread per 100 new members he brings - piece of cake for him ;D

Thanks for the flag rottenjohnh.
Ultra hideous, isn't it?

I notice that John Negroponte is not mentioned in this directly.
This is what was thought by many would follow from his appointment as US Ambassador to Iraq in 2004.
I can't help but wonder what he was up to during the period surrounding 9-11; contributing something creative to the history books perhaps?

John Negroponte - Cooperative Research
January 29, 2003
When a reporter asks US Ambassador to the UN John Negroponte if the Bush administration is still confident that the aluminum tubes imported by Iraq were intended for the country`s alleged nuclear weapons program in light of the International Atomic Energy Agency`s judgment that they were not (see January 11, 2003), Negroponte responds: "Are we convinced that those tubes were designed and were intended for enrichment of uranium? The answer is definitely, yes." [CNN, 3/1/2003]

Interesting... looking at the timeline... how the neo-con cabal consolidates, pulls their foxes out of mothballs and puts them in charge of guarding the henhouses.  Brilliant!

So true, E_T.

The post 911 period is particularly interesting.

Wasn't it globalist Holbrooke (and Albright) who were very active in instigating the demonization of the Serbs leading up to the Kosovo "war", against soverignty?

Then anti-communist Negroponte steps in at the UN and helps with the push for war.

Danforth picks it up in and obfuscates and delays a la Waco.

Somewhere in there the NSA was peeking at UK and other countries diplomatic communications with th UN or something.

Down the line we have Zionist Bolton, and the mess continues while it gets more focused as to overall goals.

Excellent analysis... if only more people would look at what is happening around them more objectively.

And regarding the YU... it was amazing how the masses gobbled up everything the media spoon-fed them in the demonization of the Serbs... Right before the bombing campaign of YU, that is when I picked up an encyclopedia and asked what is going on for the first time in my life.

Thankyou E_T.
It seems we have more than one thing in common; I too would love to see a Ron Paul Presidency.
He has delivered how many thousands of babies up until now.. 4000?
Before long he'll have delivered the nation anyway.

And as for the NATO Kosovo war getting youy attention, for me it was Saturday March 13, 1999 when the news, or I should say lack of it really got to me. CNN was telling us nothing. Less than nothing when you consider later they were shown to have been recycling stock footage from the Bosnia war as if it was from Kosovo.

That day I turned to the web for answers and without knowing where to go I went to CNN and found their forums and in the first page of what I saw was a link to FR and that's where I went. Within an hour or so I was in a state of shock which continued for many months. I began reading and archiving and I would stay up for 30 hrs. or so and then rest for several hours then continue. I did that for months. I realized that the world I had been led to believe exists doesn't and never did.

Although I was not concerned much about politics before then, NATO's war of agression made no sense to me and got my attention too and it has held it. I had to let go of many things in my life and I continued researching and as of this March past it has been 7 years. I lurked at FR continuously until after shrub's first inauguration and watched the one party two party transition and after that I explored other sources more and then by Jan 2004 I ended up at LF lurking until this Feb. and finally after the crash then I joined here and then LF.

So for me too that war was pivotal in initating my awakening.

The media is the main obstacle to large scale meaningful change now as it maintains the momentum of the false picture instilled in the masses. There was a U.S. based top PR company behind the Serb propaganda hired to do what they did; I don't recall the name of it right now. For many, the relentless mantras of the media agenda have been switched off permanently and replaced by interactive web media and now that is increasingly under attack.

Also, E_T since this is the first time we've really exchanged thoughts online, I want you to know you are one of the people who when I first began to notice you at LF, gave me a hope that more and more talented and interesting people were waking up and reaching out not only for answers, but with them. Since then I've enjoyed the articles and thoughts you post and the wonderful effect you have on the tone at LF by the respect that you elicit in so many others.

Now if only Rachel hadn't stalked you to LF - lol - I seem to recall something about that. I think I went to Reporter's Notebook at some point to try and figure out what that was all about and was unable to access much of anything there and gave up.

Wow Sherianne, this is one of my most favorite posts to me, I have a smile ear to ear right now.  I am glad that we finally, formally met.

It sounds like we have so much of a similar awakening experience starting and expanding around the same time and for the same reasons.

LOL!  That RNB is so hard to follow the way the font and format is set up.  First I started posting on an online Pakistani News Paper (their viewer comment section) that I found on DrudgeReport right after 9/11... they had an article about Canadian Intell exposing Israeli involvement with some internal memo... and some other article on Israeli/Mossad involvement (because the way Wolfowitz and Netanyahu acted immediately after 9/11, I suspected that was the case)...Anyway, back to the news paper, that is where I learned about the USS Liberty and the Lavon Affair from other viewers posting comments.  Then I googled an article and it brought me to RNB, I lurked for awhile and then started posting there early 2002 then of course, in 2005 I started at LF due to Graybeard's persuasion and now here too.  While I was gone for awhile from RNB in 2004 I think it was, that is when the Rachel1958 character showed up... I had just assumed it was a Kreplach multiple... but I guess I was wrong?

Notice the silence from the Mohammedans when discussion turns to Kosovo.

Muslims far and wide supported American intervention in Kosovo on behalf of Muslims, but are against it when Muslims are the targets like in Iraq.

Can anyone remind me how they are different from Jews?

Me too E_T. :)
And a Pakistani online paper`¦ that's wild! It's just so crazy we have to go half way round the world to find out anything of substance. I have more and better connections with people I've never even met in person than the people in the building where I live.
I recall one of the first threads I looked at over at the-other-site; it was on AIG and its being the first U.S. company allowed into China c/o Bush Sr. or Nixon, Kissinger, Scowcroft, Haig, ??  - I forget and used by the CIA to debrief Chinese students in the U.S. and the first thread was so cryptic and full of wild and at first unfamiliar concepts like CIA drug dealing, I just stared at it for ages and gradually things started to make some sense. From there I was treated to 2 years of anti-Clinton/Gore and things like alamo_girl's Downside Legacy and Remembering the Dead and so on.
I am starting to wish I'd had the time and courage to do more than read and archive for so many years.
I guess I have somehow through all of that come to interesting places and begun to make some good acquaintances.

----------
I had been working on a reply (on the media role re: YU) while you replied so I will post that next.

A little background on the subject of Wars for Sale... not the PR company I was referring to and not U.S. based but relevant. Notice this is many years before Clinton took NATO into Kosovo.

Excerpt of interview with Ruder & Finn representative Harff from:
Stopping the War in Yugoslavia - by Yohanan Ramati

Quote:

This article appeared in "Midstream - A Monthly Jewish Review" in April, 1994. Yohanan Ramati is director of the Jerusalem Institute for Western Defense.

The civil war in Yugoslavia continues, with untold suffering on all sides. The media report the suffering of the Muslims in gruesome detail. The suffering of Croats at Muslim hands gets little attention. The suffering of Serbs is ignored. So it will surprise large sections of the American public that some 600,000 refugees from Croatia and Bosnia have saught (sic) refuge in beliguered (sic) Serbia deprived of food and fuel by UN dictate during the deadly winter.

The media in the Western world, the Muslim world and Israel treats us to a regular dose of tearjacking (sic) hate propaganda. We see women and children in Sarajevo - the Muslim quarters of Sarajevo - with terrible wounds seeping blood and shattered limbs, to the accompaniment of shells and small arms fire. We do not see the killing and maiming of Serb women and children by Muslim fire in Bosnia or by Croat fire in Croatia. And when Croat women and children are brutally murdered by Muslims, or vice versa, the media response is sporadic and no conclusions are drawn. This organized anti-Serb and pro-Muslim propaganda should cause anyone believing in democracy and free speech serious concern. It recalls Hitler's propaganda against Allies in World War II. Facts are twisted and, when convenient, disregarded. The selectivity in reporting and comment is far too blatant to be accidental. The Western governments do not control their media sufficiently to be responsible for it. So who is? Who is bankrolling and masterminding the vast effort to destroy a people the United States, England and France have no reason to hate in order to establish a second Muslim state in a Balkan province where Muslims are minority?
Part of the answer is provided by a revealing interview by Mr. James Harff (director of Ruder & Finn Global Public Affairs) given to Mr. Jacques Merlino in Paris in October 1993. Ruder & Finn are public relations company, currently registered as foreign agents. Here are Harff's statements, slightly abridged.

Harrf: For 18 months, we have been working for the Republics of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well as for the opposition in Kosovo. Throughout this period, we had many successes, giving us a formidable international image. We intend to make advantage of this and develop commercial agreements with these countries. Speed is vital, because items favourable to us must be settled in public opinion. The first statement counts. The retractions have no effect.

<snip>

Harff: To have managed to put Jewish opinion on our side. This was a sensitive matter, as the dossier was dangerous looked from this angle. President Tudjman [of Croatia] was very careless in his book "Wastelands of Historical Reality". Reading this writtings (sic), one could accuse him of of (sic) antisemitism. In Bosnia, the situation was no better: President Izetbegovic strongly supported the creation of a fundamentalist Islamic state [there] in his book "The Islamic Declaration". Besides, the Croatian and Bosnian past was marked by a real and cruel anti-semitism. Tens of thousands of Jews perished in Croatian camps. So there was every reason for intellectuals and Jewish organizations to be hostile towards the Croats and Bosnians. Our challenge was to reverse this attitude. And we succeded  (sic) masterfully.

At the beginning of August 1992, "New York Newsday" came out with the affair of [Serb] concentration camps. We jumped at the opportunity immediately. We outwitted three big Jewish organizations - B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Jewish Congress. We suggested to them to publish an advertisement in the "New York Times" and to organize demonstrations outside the United Nations.

That was a tremendous coup. When the Jewish organizations entered the game on the side of the [Muslim] Bosnians, we could promptly equate the Serbs with the Nazis in the public mind. Nobody understood what was happening in Yugoslavia. The great majority of Americans were probably asking themselves in which African country Bosnia was situated. But by a single move we were able to present a simple story of good guys and bad guys, which would hereafter play itself. We won by targeting Jewish audience. Almost immediately there was a clear change of language in the press, with the use of words with high emotional content, such as "ethnic cleansing", "concentration camps", etc., which evoked images of Nazi Germany and the gas chambers of Auschwitz. The emotional charge was so powerful that nobody could go against it.

<snip>

The American Jewish organizations and leaders outwitted by Ruder & Finn can now pat themselves on the back. They have played a major role in gaining the world's sympathy for antisemitic regimes in Yugoslavia. They are "politically correct".

One small fact remains to be determined: who paid Ruder & Finn? It seems unlikely that the governments of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia could raise the money required. Are we dealing here with Arab money? With the money of US oil companies operating in the Arab states? With the money of international banks?

<snip>

Top post. Will have to have a look through the links.

He's a real piece of work alright. I think it might have been an elite squad of troops directly under his command that were suspected to be responsible for the assasination of the Italian intelligence agent that was killed rescuing the Italian journalist.

Hi E_T;
I read the article and browsed the other site. I had not come across that group before... so many sources all pointing to the same problem.

With respect to Russia being NATO's real target; through the Charter of Paris for a New Europe - Nov21-90 Text of Charter, the Rambouillet Accord / Rambouillet Ultimatum and the widespread destruction it caused in Serbia; NATO's War of Aggression with its 78 days of "humanitarian bombing" was but one facet of a larger plan for isolating Russia, usurping its resources, enslaving it financially and neutralizing its military capability. That plan has now morphed into the (CIA/Mossad global jihad) War on Terra and through the coalition of the greedy, the bribed and the blackmailed has become the ongoing U.S. campaign for global domination and confiscation of resources. While attempting to expand its empire the U.S. has also escalated a very real war on the U.S. dollar.

The IMF played a major role in the events leading up to the bombing of YU just it did in the period immediately after the fall of the Soviet Union and it remains an antagonist and factor in NATO expansion into the former Soviet block, Putin's handling of Russian oligarchs and Russian debt repayment.

As a result of the Kosovo War and many other factors including NATO's expansionism, the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the mainly Israeli instigated campaign to attack Iran; Russia China, Iran, Venezuela and others are now developing ever closer co-operative relationships. Though new illegal U.S. wars of aggression have followed, the shock waves of the U.S. sponsored NATO war of agression against the Serbs of Yugoslavia and Kosovo will never pass.
