IRS admits, apologizes for targeting right-wing groups in election run-up

Officials from the US Internal Revenue Service apologized Friday after confessing that the agency had targeted conservative political groups, putting them under extra scrutiny during the months leading up to the 2012 presidential election.

Organizations that used words including “tea party” or “patriot” in their applications for tax-exempt status were flagged. Some were asked for their list of financial donors, a flagrant violation of IRS policy, Lois Lerner, an IRS division head, told the Associated Press.

“That was wrong. That was absolutely incorrect, it was insensitive and it was inappropriate,” she said. “That’s not how we go about selecting cases for further review. The IRS would like to apologize for that.”

Approximately 75 groups were targeted, although none had their tax-exempt status revoked, Lerner added. She reiterated that the scheme was started by low-level employees in Cincinnati, Ohio and that IRS higher-ups were not privy to what was happening at the time.

“They didn’t do it because of any political bias,” Lerner continued. “It was an error in judgment and it wasn’t appropriate but that’s what they did. We’ve now corrected these issues, and we don’t expect that any of these will be repeated going forward.”

Tea Party groups and similarly-minded activists who were outspoken in their disdain for US President Barack Obama complained of mistreatment from the IRS before the election, when political feelings are naturally heightened. Sal Russo, founder of the Tea Party Express political action committee, told ABC News that though his group was never harassed by the IRS, he did hear of government resistance to the tax exemption requests.

“On our bus tours the local Tea Party groups were all screaming about it,” Russo said. “It was so pronounced around the country that it was obvious the Tea Party groups were being targeted. Not unlike any bureaucracy, the first reaction is to deny everything even when they don’t know the facts.”

He added that he was “glad they finally acknowledged what was obvious to everyone else.”

Other leaders in the Tea Party, a right-wing anti-government faction created in 2009 in reaction to government relief for foreclosed-upon homeowners, were decidedly less forgiving.

“It is suspicious that the activity of these ‘low-level workers’ was unknown to IRS leadership at the time it occurred,” Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator for Tea Party Patriots, which bills itself as the biggest Tea Party group in the US, told ABC. “President Obama must also apologize for his administration ignoring repeated complaints by these broad grassroots organizations of harassment by the IRS in 2012, and make concrete and transparent steps today to ensure this never happens again.”

One coincidence that’s fueled conspiracy theories is the IRS’ responsibility to enforce Obama’s health care law, which critics have cited as prime evidence of governmental overreach. Jay Sekulow, an outspoken conservative lawyer, equated the wrongdoings by the IRS to government censorship during the American Civil Rights movement when he spoke to The New York Times in 2011.

“This is obviously a coordinated effort by the IRS to stifle these Tea Party and Tea Party-affiliated groups, and to stifle free speech activities,” he said.

RW - “That’s not how we go about selecting cases for further review." - and yet they do. And will continue to do regardless of a meaningless apology. I think that what's intended with such a 'revelation' is to further instill fear in the people as a whole.

Obama is the Teflon Negro.  Scandals crop up & quickly evaporate.  Nobody likes him except Jews, banksters, blacks & wetbacks & a few deluded whites.  I still see lots of Obama bumper stickers, his supporters are too stubborn to admit he's a tool.

Yes, but they definitely cannot go against their policy asking for lists of political sponsorship, as any list that might come from that would be full of the names of chosen.  And they are afraid of ticking off their bosses.

US tax agency chief resigns over targeting of conservative political groups - Obama

Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller

US President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that the acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service has resigned in the wake of news that the government financial agency targeted conservative political groups seeking tax relief for extra scrutiny.

Steven Miller, who was not in charge of the IRS at the time of the wrongdoing, will step aside in light of the bureau’s “inexcusable” misconduct. A visibly angry Obama said that the extra screening for Tea Party groups before the presidential election last year was “an outrage.”

“I am angry about it,” Obama said, adding that the American people should be upset, as well. “Everybody believes what happened... is an outrage. The good news is that it's fixable...I'll do everything in my power to ensure that this never happens again.”

His short remarks were in response to the controversy that has reverberated throughout Washington in recent days. Obama previously said the accusations were “outrageous” but waited for a report from the US Treasury Department’s inspector general to publicly elaborate on the matter.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, who is also a top Obama deputy, requested Miller’s resignation. Miller will not step down immediately, but in June, according to NBC News.

“An urgent need to restore public trust,” Lew wrote in a letter to Miller. “I find it necessary at this time to request your resignation.”

The results of the inspector general’s probe, which were made public Tuesday, do not blame IRS leadership in Washington for initiating the screening process - but do fault them for failing to adequately supervise employees in the Cincinnati office where the targeting program was born. Lori Lerner, the head of the tax-exempt organizations department, blamed “low level employees” for using terms like “Tea Party” and “patriot” to filter and prevent right-wing groups from being granted tax-exempt status due to suspicions they were engaged solely in political activities.

Included in the IRS’ responsibilities are collecting federal taxes as well as interpreting and enforcing the Internal Revenue Code.

“It should not matter what political stripe you’re from. The fact of the matter is the IRS has to operate with absolute integrity,” Obama continued on Wednesday. “We’re going to hold the responsible parties accountable.

In an editorial published Tuesday in USA Today Miller admitted filtering took place but denied it was motivated by political differences.

“There was a shortcut taken in our processes to determine which groups needed additional review,” he wrote. “The mistakes we made were due to the absence of a sufficient process for working the increase in cases and a lack of sensitivity to the implications of some of the decisions that were made.”

US Attorney General Eric Holder, who announced the Department of Justice had launched an investigation into the 18 months the IRS admitted scrutinizing political groups, said he was unsure which, if any, laws had been broken. The Justice Department’s inquiry joins three Congressional committees that are scheduled to begin examining what happened in hearings this week.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Holder called the practice "outrageous and unacceptable" and pledged to fully investigate.

IRS agents, who also screened groups championing the Constitution and Bill of Rights, stymied the organizations because they were trying to determine if the political activities of the groups disqualified them from tax exemption, according to the Associated Press.

The snared groups claimed social welfare on their applications. Such charitable groups are permitted to engage in political activity, but politics cannot be their single reason for existence. Current tax law leaves it to the IRS to make that decision.

Other non-Tea Party political groups were not screened.

“The criteria developed by the Determinations Unit gives the appearance that the IRS is not impartial in conducting its mission,” the inspector general’s report said.

The flawed sorting process did not result in any group having its application denied, but many still have yet to hear back on applications filed years ago. As of December 2012 the average delay lasted 574 days, which could have hurt the likelihood donors would contribute.

RW - "I'll do everything in my power to ensure that this never happens again." - He'll issue an executive order to impose the death penalty (officially) for whistleblowers. Jew firing a jew. Makes me feel warm all over. But then who else is working in government? I'm sure he'll find work with J.P. Morgan next week.

Devil's Advocate:  is this a manufactured scandal?  IRS is supposed to separate political groups from "social welfare" groups.  I don't know how sophisticated their databases are, seems like screening for key words would be an obvious if crude method to determine which groups deserved further screening.  So far I haven't seen info indicating that IRS only screened for conservative groups. & some commentators say that Karl Rove, for one, cheated regularly on the regs.

Of course ADL/AIPAC/B'nai Brith etc cheat too but always skate.  IMO tax-exempt status is a mine-field & should be stopped.

May very well be.

That easy. Don't apply. It's the same old story - expecting the privilege of protection (your wallet) rather than standing on natural law which such groups seem not to have a clue about unless they are on talk radio where rhetoric supersedes action. Do such outfits like 501c churches expect legal protection when those they seek protection from are the very same who will prosecute them when religion becomes the next target should they be deemed political as is the case here. Perhaps it is not a prosecution in this case, but it is most certainly persecution. Would the IRS have been able to single out 'conservatives' if they never registered or had any information of those who were members of these organizations? It is a sad day when so-called conservatives so easily trust the enemy - which is the government - make no mistake about it.

Bulls**t.  Liberals have been screaming for overr 40 years about Nixon's Enemies List.  Now that it's been clearly shown that Obama applied the same tactics, this is a legitimate scandal.  Bill & Hillary did the same, but have cover from other scandals and lawyerly dodging.

Your Jew buddies, Bill Maher & Jon Stewart Liebowitz, think that anything even slightly to the right of their Cultural Marxism is "right wing."

It's a legitimate scandal in the sense that Obama has indeed been a disaster who is guilty of all sorts of evil & illegality.  But who decides what scandals get big airplay?  Could Obama's "Trifecta" of scandals be a Jew push to have Obama increase war on Syria and/or Iran?  I think perhaps the real aim is to help Rubio in 2016.  Jew banksters dumped Nixon & crowned Rothschild tool Carter who did a bang up job for them what with sneaky deregulation/war on Afghanistan/Greenie crap.

It's been some kinda pattern to make the sitting president look bad in his 2nd term so the people wish they had a president from the other party.

Yes, first thought that came to mind, too.  Give Obama plenty of distraction and someone else had better be making policy decisions.

IRS Inquisition Update

Along with targeting tea-party groups, the IRS may also have given extra-special attention to the tax-exempt status of some Jewish groups for political reasons.

From the Jewish Press:

The passionately pro-Israel organization Z STREET filed a lawsuit against the IRS, claiming it had been told by an IRS agent that because the organization was “connected to Israel,” its application for tax-exempt status would receive additional scrutiny.  This admission was made in response to a query about the lengthy reveiw of Z STREET’s tax exempt status application.

In addition, the IRS agent told a Z STREET representative that the applications of some of those Israel-related organizations have been assigned to “a special unit in the D.C. office to determine whether the organization’s activities contradict the Administration’s public policies.” . . .

And at least one purely religious Jewish organization, one not focused on Israel, was the recipient of bizarre and highly inappropriate questions about Israel.  Those questions also came from the same non-profit division of the IRS at issue for inappropriately targeting politically conservative groups. The IRS required that Jewish organization to state “whether [it] supports the existence of the land of Israel,” and also demanded the organization “[d]escribe [its] religious belief system toward the land of Israel.”

More bureaucratic snafus?

RW - it seems that the IRS was actually doing their job back in 2009 - well before the Tea Party, etc. were seeking tax-exempt status.

You might have some pretty good points here, although there's not enough knowledge on my end to comment about Rubio.

Not enough people are wise enough to see through "media bias."  Although it's true that there is a liberal slant, it's incidental to Jew control.  The elephant in the living room is Jew bias.  If this was strictly a matter of "only scandals for Republicans," then the Democrats would be overlooked.  Most people totally missed the gist of Lewinsky.  A Jew honeypot, though and through.  She was placed there as an intern because of a Jew campain contributor.  All the while the Jew mole, Rahm Emanuel, reported back to Tel Aviv.  It was even in the Starr Report that a "foreign government" was tapping phone calls.  Gee, who might that have been?

These Obama scandals are warning shots of some sort to destablize the adminstration.  However, Obama doesn't have much to lose.  He'll walk off into the sunset with a book deal and speaking engagements.  The worst that Jews can do to him now is smear him.

It's been some kinda pattern to make the sitting president look bad in his 2nd term so the people wish they had a president from the other party.

No question, 2nd terms have traditionally been disasters.  The lame duck status is only part of the equation.
