On the Knife Edge of WWIII

Keep a close eye on events - US is "pulling out" of Iraq (freeing up more troops to 'invade' else-where) - China has now got it's first big aircraft carrier at sea for work-up trials - India has invited the Chinese to witness the biggest ever display of it's naval power (just to let them know what they face to the South) - US has lost a highly sophisticated spy drone over Iran and demands it be returned to them (of course the Iranians will by now have given the Russians and China full access to it) - Israel is pushing hard to stir more trouble in Palestine - Syria is top of the "hit list" - and of course the US/Israeli zionist regime is itching to take out Iranian nuclear power plants ..........

The flag of American forces in Iraq has been lowered in Baghdad, bringing nearly nine years of US military operations in Iraq to a formal end.

The US Defence Secretary, Leon Panetta, told troops the mission had been worth the cost in blood and dollars.

He said the years of war in Iraq had yielded to an era of opportunity in which the US was a committed partner.

Only about 4,000 US soldiers now remain in Iraq, but they are due to leave in the next two weeks.

At the peak of the operation, US forces there numbered 170,000.

The symbolic ceremony in Baghdad officially "cased" (retired) the US forces flag, according to army tradition.
It will now be taken back to the USA.

Mr Panetta told US soldiers they could leave Iraq with great pride.

"After a lot of blood spilled by Iraqis and Americans, the mission of an Iraq that could govern and secure itself has become real," he said.

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Hussain al-Shahristani said Iraqis were glad the US troops were leaving.

"They have been difficult years," he told the BBC.

"We have had some successes together. We had some failures. We have some mishaps.

"I think we are all happy that the American soldiers are returning home safely to their families and we are also confident that the Iraqi people and their armed forces, police, are in a position now to take care of their own security."

Some 4,500 US soldiers and more than 100,000 Iraqis have died in the war.

The conflict, launched by the Bush administration in March 2003, soon became hugely unpopular as claims that Saddam Hussein was hiding weapons of mass destruction and supporting al-Qaeda militants turned out to be untrue.

The war has cost the US some $1tr.

Republicans have criticised the pullout citing concerns over Iraq's stability, but a recent poll by the Pew Research Centre found that 75% of Americans backed the troop withdrawal.

'Moment of success'
President Barack Obama, who came to office pledging to bring troops home, said on Wednesday that the US left behind a "sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq".

In a speech in North Carolina to troops who have just returned, Mr Obama hailed the "extraordinary achievement" of the military and said they were leaving with "heads held high".

"Everything that American troops have done in Iraq, all the fighting and dying, bleeding and building, training and partnering, has led us to this moment of success," he said.

Barack Obama: "You have shown why the US military is the finest fighting force in the history of the world"

"The war in Iraq will soon belong to history, and your service belongs to the ages."

He said the war had been "a source of great controversy" but that they had helped to build "a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government that was elected by its people".

Mr Obama announced in October that all US troops would leave Iraq by the end of 2011, a date previously agreed by former President George W Bush in 2008.

Some 1.5 million Americans have served in Iraq since the US invasion in 2003. In addition to those who died, nearly 30,000 have been wounded.

Troop numbers peaked during the height of the so-called surge strategy in 2007, but the last combat troops left Iraq in August last year.

A small contingent of some 200 soldiers will remain in Iraq as advisers, while some 15,000 US personnel are now based at the US embassy in Baghdad - by far the world's largest.

'Ruin and mess'
Some Iraqis have said they fear the consequences of being left to manage their own security.

Baghdad trader Malik Abed said he was grateful to the Americans for ridding Iraq of Saddam Hussein, but added: "I think now we are going to be in trouble. Maybe the terrorists will start attacking us again."

But in the city of Falluja, a former insurgent stronghold which was the scene of major US offensives in 2004, people burned US flags on Wednesday in celebration at the withdrawal.

"No-one trusted their promises, but they said when they came to Iraq they would bring security, stability and would build our country," Ahmed Aied, a grocer, told Reuters news agency.

"Now they are walking out, leaving behind killings, ruin and mess."

Concerns have also been voiced in Washington that Iraq lacks robust political structures or an ability to defend its borders.

There are also fears that Iraq could be plunged back into sectarian bloodletting, or be unduly influenced by Iran.

Analysis
John Simpson World Affairs Editor, BBC News
For 40 years, Iraq has been one of the most damaged countries on earth.

The American-led invasion and overthrow of Saddam led to a savage civil war which is still not finished.

The United States leaves behind a country embittered by the occupation.

And yet today, as the Americans pull down their flag and leave, some Iraqis hope that their country's luck may be turning.

If Iraq becomes wealthy, if it can stay more or less democratic, if it can finally bring terrorism to an end, then the 40 years of horror may be over.

Its people deserve a little good luck at last.

Timeline - US troops in Iraq
March 2003 - Operation Iraqi Freedom begins with a "shock and awe" assault on Baghdad, which falls in under a month
May 2003 - President George Bush declares "mission accomplished"
Dec 2003 - Saddam Hussein captured in a bunker south of Tikrit
April 2004 - Photos emerge showing abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison
2005 - Suicide attacks in Iraq hit all-time high as insurgency spreads
January 2007 - US troop "surge" begins, leading to a drop in violence by 2008
August 2010 - Last US combat troops leave Iraq

Mossad disinfo agent Sibel Edmonds says US troops are getting ready invade Syria.

US troops surround Syria on the eve of invasion?

Published: 13 December, 2011, 20:41

http://rt.com/usa/news/us-nato-syria-edmonds-709/

A former official from within the ranks of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is reporting that US and NATO forces have landed outside of Syria and are training militants to overthrow the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Whistleblower Sibel Edmonds, formerly a translator with the FBI, wrote over the weekend that American soldiers are among the NATO troops that have mysteriously and suddenly landed on the Jordanian and Syrian border. According to her, several sources internationally have confirmed the news, although the US media has been instructed to temporarily censor itself from reporting the news.

Additionally, Edmonds says that American and NATO forces are training Turkish troops as well, to possibly launch a strike from the north of Syria.

Edmonds writes that an Iraqi journalist based out of London has confirmed that US forces that vacated the Ain al-Assad Air Base in Iraq last week did in fact leave the country as part of President Obama’s drawdown of troops, but rather than return home, the soldiers were transferred into Jordan during the late hours of Thursday evening. Another source, writes Edmonds, informs her that “soldiers who speak languages other than Arabic” have been moving through Jordan mere miles from the country’s border with Syria. Troops believed to be NATO/American-affiliated have been spotted between the King Hussein Air Base in al-Mafraq and the Jordanian village of Albaej and its vicinity.

Nizar Nayouf, a correspondent for Edmond’s Boiling Frog Post whistleblower site, says an employee of the London-based offices of Royal Jordanian Airlines has further confirmed that at least one US aircraft transporting military personnel has brought American troops into Jordan in recent days. Nayouf, the former editor-in-chief of Sawt al-Democratiyya (Democracy's Vote), had previously been sentenced to a decade behind bars for critiquing the Syrian government. He later won several human rights awards and the 2000 UNISCO prize for press freedom.

Since the uprising of rebel forces opposing al-Assad’s regime over Syria nearly a year ago, American officials have been critical of the country’s government but insist that they have otherwise distanced themselves from becoming involved in the protests. Following the deaths of dozens of protesters in the spring of 2011, the United States imposed strict sanctions against the official government of Syria.

Navi Pillay, the United Nations’ high commissioner for human rights, revealed this week that the uprising in Syria has caused over 5,000 deaths since it began in early 2011. In the case of the crackdown against former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, NATO involvement began only one month into the uprising. Nine months later, the total death toll of the Libyan Civil War is estimated to be close to 30,000.

In her report, Edmonds says that NATO troops have been training soldiers just outside of Syria since as early as May, and that US media is prohibited from reporting on it until today. The Turkish paper Milliyet also reports that defected Syrian colonel Riad al-Assad is preparing troops to take over the Syrian government as well.

Some of those facts appear questionable.

I think we can agree that whatever the truth about US troop deployment, only sociopaths and madmen would be involved in playing this game, and provoking a war...In this case, I believe the pack of madmen are led by the US...Whatever leverage Israel is using against the US, Obama is still President, and none of this can be done without his OK...Hillary Clinton also involved, and there can be no denying that she is power crazed and possibly insane.

The Israelis are under a gangster leadership, and the Israeli people should be aware of the probable consequences of provoking a civil war in Syria...There will be a spillover.

The Jews running US foreign policy are nuts. They're going to keep going until they bring the America down.

I agree, but research would reveal their veracity

Another thread was discussing Dr.Alan Sabrosky, former Marine, and instructor at the US War College; here is a quite enlightening interview with him discussing this matter...Also involved in the interview is a USS Liberty survivor:

I believe this 4 part interview...After first part over you can just click on tube for other parts.

I agree with this. In the end he still has to give an official 'OK'. If he had any decency in him he would forfeit his presidency and fame to prevent a war.

Many surely are against the war, not that that matters though when you have absolute scum in charge.

Yes, Spahi, and just think about what might happen if he actually did resigned the Presidency in a protest: It might just be the event that would provoke this country into finally waking up and DEMANDING a real change...The WHOLE house of cards would come down.

And what would happen to him?...Of course, the is the real possibility that THEY would have him killed...But when a soldier joins the military, he takes an oath to defend our constitution and nation, and with the taking of that oath comes the possibility of dying for your country...A US President takes the same kind of oath.

If he survives, he would be hailed for the rest of his life as a hero, and would never have to work a day in his life again...He would become a true 'elder statesman' in the best sense.
