Bighorns on Buffalo Bill Dam, Shoshoni River, Cody, Wyoming

Sunday, September 26, 2010

For those who aren't familiar with the view - it's the downstream face of the dam and those dots are bighorns WALKING ACROSS IT.  They're licking the surface - salt, maybe?

What happens when a man's had enough.

One Pound Deer

This tiny deer was delivered by Caesarian section at a Wildlife hospital after a car killed his mother.

Little Rupert, who is so small he can fit in an adult's hand, was born after vets failed in their battle to save his mother.

At just 6" tall and weighing just over a pound, he is now in an incubator in the intensive care unit at Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Buckinghamshire. He has only recently opened his eyes.

Asleep: Rupert takes 40 winks.

Les Stocker, founder of Tiggywinkles, said, "Rupert's mother had very severe injuries. We brought him out and got him breathing, and then he went into an incubator on oxygen. He is now being fed by a tube."

Rupert in an incubator.  Rupert pulls a striking pose for the camera. Staff members are optimistic that Rupert, now 5 days old, will make a full recovery. "Deer are very, very tricky, but this one has spirit. He's an extremely feisty, little guy and quite pushy," Mr. Stocker said.

"At any given moment there is an orthodoxy, a body of ideas which it is assumed all right-thinking people will accept without question. It is not exactly forbidden to state this or that or the other, but it is "not done".
...Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with.

I'm not buying that bighorns would or could do that.  Why would they?  Then what do they do?

The shadows of the bighorns suggests the sun is directly to the right of them..
The shadow of the stairs in the upperleft of the dam picture shows the sun is up high.

It is safe to conclude it is a bad case of photoshop.

This banning system obviously needs some work..

Love & Grief Aren't Just for Humans

A friend recently sent me these photos of a swallow who was hit by a car.

Her mate brings her food.

When he returns with more, he sees she's dead.

His grief over her death is obvious as he tries to revive her.

Finally he accepts she's gone, but he looks angry, puzzled, lost. I don't know about you, but these images tore me apart. As a writer, if I could portray these emotions as readily as this little bird does, my work would be all the richer for the effort. If anyone doubted such simple creatures shared these complex emotions with us humans, here's the proof.

Here's a site that says it's not Buffalo Bill Dam, it's a dam in Italy, and has a link to a Google Earth shot of it., and a link to videos of the bighorns on it, within the text. Wherever it is, it's surely amazing.

The first one, especially if it is real, is rather striking.
The middle picture is what I would call 'kitschy'. (Google definition of ....)

This one is appealing, it speaks to me.

So nice to have talent!

Norway:  Strikingly bright colors, typical in Scandinavian countries.

Very colorful, it almost looks unreal.
