An American citizen, who joined the Al-Qaeda leadership in the lawless Pakistan-Afghanistan border region, Adam Gadahn, has been nabbed by security and commando forces in Pakistan, reports said.

31-yr-old, Adam Gadahn, is often quoted by media and seen as a spokesman for Al-Qaeda in the region, as recently as the March 7, 2010, heard in video calling for attacks by Muslims on western nations.

Adam Gadahn was endighted for treason in 2006 by a federal grand jury for the capital crime of treason for aiding an enemy of the United States. Adam Gadahn was the first American charged with treason since 1952.

Since 2004, Adam Gadahn has appeared in a number of videos produced by Al-Qaeda as "Azzam the American."

In 1995, at age 17, Gadahn began studying Islam at the Islamic Society of Orange County. Members of Gadahn's study group were young fundamentalists who "targeted the mosque's chairman, Haitham 'Danny' Bundakji," whom they referred to as 'Danny the Jew' for his practice of "wearing Western clothes and being overly friendly with Jews."

Gadahn converted to Islam later that year, and shortly thereafter posted an essay to the USC website describing his conversion, entitled "Becoming a Muslim."

According to his parents, Adam was "arrested and convicted of assaulting his former mentor Haitham Bundakji in May 1997". He served two days in jail, but his failure to do 40 hours of community services leaves a warrant for his arrest active.

Gadahn reportedly moved to Pakistan in 1998, where he married an Afghan refugee and maintained intermittent contact with his family.

An "important Taliban militant" was arrested in Pakistan, ending confusion over reports of U.S.-Born al Qaeda spokesman being detained. Bob Orr has the latest.

An "important Taliban militant" was arrested today in Pakistan. But that is where the confusion started.

Earlier it was reported by Pakistani media that intelligence agents had arrested Adam Gadahn, the American-born spokesman for al Qaeda, in an operation in the southern city of Karachi.

It was further reported by the Associated Press and Reuters that Gadahn had been arrested, sourcing security officials.

CBS News was told by sources in the Pakistan government that it was Gadahn, even after U.S. officials refused to confirm it was the California native for whom a $1 million reward has been posted.

Now, CBS News' Farhan Bokhari in Islamabad writes that earlier reports the detained individual was Gadahn proved false. According to a Pakistan security official who spoke with CBS News on condition of anonymity, the arrested individual is in fact "a Taliban militant leader who is known as Abu Yahya."

The official said evidence compiled from an interrogation of the suspect and information exchanged with U.S. officials verified the man's identify.

The reassessment only added to the confusion surrounding the arrest of a man earlier described by other unnamed Pakistani security officials as Gadahn.

"In the light of our latest information, I can say, this is not looking like Gadahn. But it is still the arrest of an important Taliban militant," said the Pakistani security official who spoke to CBS News late Sunday.

The New York Times, sourcing American and Pakistani officials, reports that the man arrested was Abu Yahya Mujahdeen Al-Adam, and describes him as an al Qaeda commander who was born in Pennsylvania.

Western diplomats in Islamabad, responding to the latest twist to this increasingly confusing saga, said the arrest is not insignificant. "Even if this is not Adam Gadahn, it is still not an unimportant development. But let's hold our breath before we come to a final conclusion. We may be groping in the dark 'til someone, especially the Pakistanis who are holding this man, agree to present him publicly," said one western diplomat in Islamabad who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity.

I'm guessing this whole episode was done by Pak intel as a jab against the Zios/Uncle Sam/London.  What better way to expose Al Kayda as a hoax than to focus attention on the laughable Gadahn story.  Of course there was no Gadahn arrest since it's highly unlikely he ever set foot in Pakistan, Afghanistan or any Muslim country.  He made his dumb little videos in LA or NYC or Tel Aviv.

IMO Gadahn is too much of a joke to be a serious spy.  Even assuming that 'Al Kayda' officials are either puppets or dupes, they'd have to be total morons to trust some Joo youngster like this.  BTW the last year I got a sly idea:  what if all Americans converted to Islam?  Poof, there goes the justification for the GWOT!  London/Wall St/Tel Aviv would have to think up an alternative right quick.  Mebbe Eskimo terrorists infuriated about the "melting ice"!

Mistaken identiy on Gadahn, Pakistan says

KARACHI, Pakistan, March 9 (UPI) -- Pakistani authorities withdrew their claim that a suspected American citizen captured in Karachi is the U.S.-born al-Qaida fugitive Adam Gadahn.

Pakistani authorities lauded the alleged arrest of Gadahn, an Oregon native, as the latest in a string of high-profile operations in Pakistan. A joint CIA raid with the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence Service in Karachi in February resulted in the capture of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, one of highest-ranking Taliban officials arrested in years.

Following a FBI denial, however, Pakistan said Monday claim of the Gadahn capture was a case of mistaken identity. Islamabad said the man captured in Karachi is Abu Yahya Majadin Adam, whose name closely resembles a Gadahn alias, London's Independent newspaper reports.

The Independent said Adam was an American citizen, however, raising concerns about the presence of foreign militants operating in Pakistan.

The media went into a frenzy following early announcements of the possible capture of Gadahn, who has a $1 million bounty for his arrest. A similar whirl erupted over the alleged death of Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud.

Mehsud allegedly died from wounds suffered during a U.S. airstrike in January.

Mehsud was last heard from in an audio tape Jan. 16. Alam Tariq, the official spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, has not issued a formal announcement, leaving the situation speculative.

LAHORE, Pakistan -- A suicide car bombing at a building that houses terrorism investigations in Lahore killed at least 13 people and wounded 80 others Monday, the first terrorist strike to hit a major city in the country's heartland this year.

The blast targeted a special investigative unit that interrogates key terrorism suspects. The entire building collapsed from the force of the blast, and rescuers spent the morning searching for survivors.

Lahore's administrative chief, Khusro Pervez, said the bomber had crashed through a security gate before ramming a perimeter wall and detonating what police said were more than 1,100 pounds of explosives.

Rana Sanaullah, law minister for Punjab province, which includes Lahore, called the attack "a sad and condemnable incident," adding: "These terrorists are trying to destabilize the country. The government will not let them succeed with their agenda."

Meanwhile, the American al-Qaida operative arrested in Karachi over the weekend turned out not to be the Southern California native wanted by the United States on treason charges for his involvement in the terror network, Pakistani intelligence officials said Monday. They suggested that he may instead be a Pennsylvania native.

The mistake in making the original identity seems highly suspicious.  It's as if  'our boys' were overly eager to let the world know that they really want to nab him ... even though they've missed again.
