Mercosur tells Brits to leave Malvinas

Members of the Mercosur bloc have rejected Britain's claim to sovereignty over the Falkland archipelago as an overseas territory.

The South American trade bloc unanimously backed Argentina's efforts to gain possession of the chain of islands, originally known as Islas Malvinas, located some 300 miles off the Argentinean coast in the southern Atlantic, AFP reported.

Mercosur, or the Southern Common Market, issued a statement on Tuesday announcing the members' "support to the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands."

The statement also said that Britain's claim `is incompatible with the existence of a
sovereignty dispute over such archipelagos.`

The British conquered the islands in 1690 and have had settlers there ever since.

Britain and Argentina fought a war over the islands in 1982, which ended after the South American country surrendered.

It certainly dont belong to the Argentines, they tried to nick it by force, and got their arses well and truly kicked off, so that is that.
The only thing that really changes is their names.

they passed a new constitution that increases transparency - guess they want to know who is there and what they are doing - this makes sense. But they passed it unilaterally, which lead to this friction. Unfortunately, Russia is down there and may back the Argentinians in this so there may be more to this

Theres a lot of resources down in the South Atlantic and no doubt greedy eyes all round the globe are on them occaisionally. It makes sense if Russia is using Argentina to try and pull something off, theres no way the Argies could do it alone, theyd just get another kicking.

Would the British face the Russians off I wonder? Maybe, as we have nukes as well, I'd like to think so anyway, there should be no easy gains from Blighty, even for ressurging old superpowers!  ;)
